Avengers Infinity War end: Gamora final scene EXPLAINED – Where is she? Is she dead?

Fans are still reeling from the dramatic final scenes of infinity War.

There was even more death and destruction than anyone had imagined, including the loss of major characters.

Among all the heartbreaking scenes there was one sudden quiet moment which sparked a storm of questions, theories and hopes.

Now the directors themselves have clarified what happened in that last scene with Thanos and Gamora.

WARNING MAJOR SPOILERS

As half of all life is erased cross the universe, Thanos suddenly disappears into a strange orange dimension where he sees Gamora as a young girl.

Fans quickly worked out he was somehow inside the Soul Stone.

Does this mean Gamora is still alive, that her sacrifice to the Soul Stone means she did not pass across into death but is being held inside the Infinity Stone instead?

By extension, does this mean everyone erased in the Snap, which used the power of the orange gem, is also being held there?

At a special school event in the US the Russo brothers were aksed if Gamora was still alive inside the Soul Stone.

They said: “She in fact is, yes…

“Every villain is a hero in their own story and as insane and psychotic and brutal and violent as Thanos is, he’s a more complex villain if you go on a journey with him emotionally. He does care for things and it is complicated for him to execute his plan and it cost him something.

“He said at the end that it cost him everything and that it was the only thing he loved which was Gamora, which is why we put him back with her at the end.” 

This ties with earlier comments from the Russos who said that Thanos was virtually unbeatable and his only vulnerability lay in his personal life. This points more and more to Gamora as the key to his defeat or to undoing The Snap.

However the directors are determined to keep fans guessing for the next twelve months until Avengers 4.

Joe Russo clarified their coments about Gamora by telling Comicbook.com: “To clarify, it’s a spiritual representation of her and obviously that’s something that the Soul Stone has power to do. But really it’s there to illustrate his pain and his guilt. I wouldn’t read much more into it beyond that.”

This also makes sense since the Gamora shown is a young girl. 

However, it also does not deny that souls taken by the Infinity Stone might still be kept alive in some kind of limbo.

Clearly Gamora’s role in the saga is not done. It seems certain she will be back in Avengers 4, whether as another apparition or as her real self in the Soul Stone, or even restored to full life somehow.

It will be a long twelve-month wait to find out…
