Avengers Infinity War: Zoe Saldana speaks out after Gamora shocks (SPOILERS)
WARNING: Major spoilers ahead for Avengers: Infinity War.
Multiple characters died at the end of the Marvel movie, but one of the most gut-wrenching moments came much earlier on.
Saldana’s Gamora was murdered by her adoptive father, Thanos, when he had to sacrifice “someone he loves” to obtain the Soul Stone.
Taking to Instagram, Saldana reacted to the fans’ heartbreak – as it was revealed that the film has broken the global record for top-grossing opening weekend.
“I wanna take this time to say thank you to all of you,” she said.
“Thanks to you, Avengers has broken a record that, after Avatar, was unimaginable – and I feel like the luckiest girl in the world to be part of yet another adventure that just makes a difference.
“And I just wanted to say thank you so much – your support and loyalty means everything and it never goes unseen.
“So I wanted to take the time to say thank you very much. I see you all, thanks to my assistant and my sisters and my husband I’ve been able to read my comments.
“And all of your energy is infectious, and it inspires me and keeps me going. So thank you!”
Saldana – who has hinted she will be back for Avengers 4 – was on-set for Avatar’s sequel at the time, her face covered in dots that will later be used for CGI.
Avatar, released back in 2009, was a huge smash hit – achieving a global box office total of $2.78 billion.
Somewhat awkwardly, its director – James Cameron – has spoken out very vocally against the Marvel movies, putting Saldana right in the middle.
Cameron had said: “I’m hoping we’ll start getting Avenger fatigue here pretty soon. Not that I don’t love the movies.
“It’s just, come on guys, there are other stories to tell besides hyper-gonadal males without families doing death-defying things for two hours and wrecking cities in the process. It’s like, oy!”
Saldana since said in response: “Just read the full article and you will understand where James Cameron was coming from.
“I know that all the Marvel producers did because they read it.”
Avengers: Infinity War is out now.
