Back to the Future 4: Robert Zemeckis reveals what it would take for sequel to be made
Yesterday, Josh Gad released the second episode of his Reunited Apart YouTube episodes with the cast and main crew members of Back to the Future. During the pandemic, the Frozen actor is hosting virtual reunions for famous movies in aid of charity. Joining the likes of Doc Brown and Marty McFly stars Christopher Lloyd and Michael J Fox, were co-writers, producer and director Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis.
Inevitably, Back to the Future 4 was brought up by Gad towards the end of the reunion.
The 39-year-old said: “Bob and Bob have said there’s never going to be another Back to the Future sequel, which I hope is a lie.
“If hypothetically they were, I would love to hear what you would pitch for Marty and Doc to travel back to and why.”
Lorraine star Lea Thompson joked: “I’d like it to go back to January where they could warn us about corona!”

While producer and co-writer Bob Gale said: “Well it would have to be that Doc and Marty find out that we’re thinking about making another Back to the Future movie and they come back to the stop us from doing such a crazy thing.”
But interestingly director Robert Zemeckis added: “If I had an idea which I could have pitched to Bob with a straight face, we would have made it.
“I have no answer to that question.”
This suggests that had Bob Z had a good enough concept that Bob G would have agreed to, Back to the Future 4 would have happened.

But since that never happened, and the pair have repeatedly said a fourth film will never happen, the Back to the Future trilogy is well and truly sealed.
Unless, someone has a DeLorean, of course.
Back in 2015, Zemeckis confirmed that Back to the Future 4 or a reboot is impossible until after both he and Gale have died.
He told The Telegraph: “And then I’m sure they’ll do it, unless there’s a way our estates can stop it.”

He added: “I mean, to me, [a remake is] outrageous. Especially since it’s a good movie.
“It’s like saying ‘Let’s remake Citizen Kane. Who are we going to get to play Kane?’
“What folly, what insanity is that? Why would anyone do that?”
While in February Gale told the BBC that both he and Zemeckis are constantly lobbied by Hollywood executives to make another film.
He said: “All the time. All the time. ‘What can we do to convince you guys to do this?’ We said, ‘Nothing’. ‘You’ll make a lot of money.’ ‘We already made a lot of money.’
“You know, you don’t sell your kids into prostitution. It was the wrong thing to do. We put ‘The End’ at the end of part three.”
Nevertheless, Back to the Future lives on in the new musical, which saw its cast perform at the end of the reunion.
Plus there’s the ‘90s animated series, a recent video game and comics all set after the end of Back to the Future Part III for fans to enjoy.
