Batman cast: Was Ben Afleck ‘dropped’ from Batman?

It is already known that Henry Cavill will no longer be playing the role of Superman in the DC Comics-based movie franchise.

But Ben Affleck, too, could be for the chop following a statement hidden in a report from Variety.

The report reads Warner Bros is “not currently moving forward with Batman and Superman movies featuring Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill, respectively.

“It is expected to recast the Dark Knight with a different actor for director Matt Reeves’ upcoming Batman solo outing.”

What does this mean for Ben Affleck?

The rumours surrounding both Affleck’s and Cavill’s exit from the superhero franchise had been swirling ever since WB announced their Supergirl movie.

Many sources have been quoted saying the studio planned to look elsewhere for inspiration when it came to the superhero blockbusters.

Affleck, 46, was supposed to be directing the solo Batman film.

But he was replaced by Matt Reeves when he quit the role.

Then, eagle-eyed fans noticed that while promoting the new movie, Reeves had slowly started to stop mentioning the actor in relation to the upcoming film. 

While Affleck himself has not addressed the rumours, it is thought Warner Bros is already looking for his replacement.

However, it doesn’t look as though the 46-year-old is too bothered by the claims – as the Gone Girl actor was pictured beaming as he ran errands in Santa Monica this week.

The news comes just days after Affleck completed a 40-day stint in rehab for alcohol addiction.

Sharing a rare message on Instagram about his personal life, he thanks friends and family for their support.

He posted: “This week I completed a forty day stay at a treatment centre for alcohol addiction and remain in outpatient care.

“The support I have received from my family, colleagues and fans means more to me than I can say.

“Its given me the strength and support to speak about my illness with others.”

DC Universe co-star Henry Cavill will also be hanging up his cape.

Cavill, who starred in 2013’s Man of Steel, 2016’s Batman v Superman and last year’s Justice League, is believed to be hanging up the red cape after finding success in the Mission: Impossible franchise.

Before the recent Warner Bros announcement, a source hinted at a Cavill exit, saying: “‘Superman is like James Bond, and after a certain run you have to look at new actors.

“There’s a recognition that some parts of the previous movies didn’t work.”
