BBC Question Time audience member sends Twitter into meltdown for shock Corbyn outburst
The audience member came to Mr Corbyn’s defence following a discussion about racism and hatred in both main political parties. Much attention was placed on anti-Semitism in the Labour party, with Islamaphobia being cited as a huge problem in the Conservative Party.
Lionel Shriver and Brandon Lewis came to Boris Johnson’s defence over his comments in a Daily Telegraph op-ed when he said Muslin women looked like “letter boxes”.
While Ms Shirver said she saw nothing wrong with what he had said, Mr Lewis said it was important to uphold an individuals right to free speech.
These comments were met with fierce opposition from other guests on the panel as well as number of audience members.
One audience member proceeded to defend Mr Corbyn following his disastrous interview with Andrew Neil where he failed to apologise for anti-Semitism in his party.
The audience member said: “it think that the compassion and love seems to have gone out of society.
“Religions on the whole seem to have not been able to teach us about how to be compassionate, to forgive and to love each other.
“Jeremy Corbyn made an apology back in 2008 and it seems to me it doesn’t matter how many times he apologises it just doesn’t seem enough.
“What happened to forgiveness? Why does somebody have to keep on saying the same thing over and over again and not be believed?
“It seems to me that people just don’t understand or recognise a decent person when they see one anymore.”
A few laughs could be heard from the audience when she said this, though throughout the audience remained quiet and occasionally applauded her speech.
Despite respect from her fellow audience members, Mr Corbyn’s defender faced fierce criticism on Twitter, with many quick to highlight cracks in her argument.
One Twitter user wrote: “So what this woman is saying is that 2 Black people on the front bench understand more about anti-semitism than 87% of the Jewish community, and people wonder why we are terrified?”
Another said: “If he apologised in 2008 as this lady states, why is it still happening 11 years later?”
A separate user wrote: “Why keep blaming the press – Corbyn makes his own headlines -IRA, Hamaz, Hezbollah, rogue nations, Putin, Venezuala, anti semitism, anti West, anti NATO – Marxist economics & politics.”
Despite the pushback, many supported the audience member in the same Twitter thread, highlighting their frustrations with the apparent bad treatment of the Labour leader.
One user said: “Well said that person. I think alot of the nation whom was watching this do agree that this has gone on far too much. This smearing of Jeremy Corbyn is unprecedented.”
Another wrote: “Thank you that brilliant lady. We have a media hounding a man who has fought racism all his life…. HOUNDING! While Boris Johnson and the Tories not only spout racist remarks but implement racist policies. Shame on the BBC….shame on the MSM.”
