Bird Box on Netflix: Surprise bombshell about THAT house sparks unlikely fan craze

The Sandra Bullock-fronted thriller has gone down a treat with viewers since its release before Christmas, with the streaming giant reporting that an astronomical 45 million accounts have watched it. Now, viewers have cottoned on to the fact that the refuge the film’s characters use – in order to hide from the mysterious evil force – was not filmed on a film studio, but is an actual residential property.

It’s located in Monrovia, about 20 miles away from Los Angeles in the US.

Since it was hunted down, TMZ claims its owners have been utterly inundated with film fans coming along to take photos there.

This, it seems, has included Christmas Day – and many have brought their own blindfolds along to recreate the movie’s now iconic motif.

The US site adds that most people who’ve stopped by have been very polite, and have even knocked on the door to ask permission to pose for snaps.

The owner, who has not been named, was reportedly paid $12,000 for the exterior of her house to be used.

But, incredibly, she has managed to dodge the whole phenomenon – because she doesn’t subscribe to Netflix.

Director Susanne Bier recently spoke out about the movie’s release direct to streaming, as opposed to in cinemas.

“Look, in an ideal world, I’d have anybody watching anything I did on a huge screen. That’s not the reality,” she told Radio Times.

“I want them to see the stories that I’m making. The reason why I’m a filmmaker is I feel strongly that I’ve got something to tell the world.

“Netflix has 130 million subscribers, so the potential of hitting a really big audience with something that is entertaining and thrilling and has a real heart to it is irresistible.

“For a filmmaker, that’s an irresistible cocktail. And I’d much rather do that than insisting on something which is only going to be on a big screen and is going to hit a much lower audience.

“I’m going to be killed by a lot of my colleagues, but that’s actually what I feel about that.”
