Black panther: Will Ryan Coogler make a female spin-off? Who will it star?
The director of Black Panther has said he would love to make a female spin-off of the highly acclaimed movie, which has made millions at the box office.
Ryan Coogler said a sequel of the film could focus on the women of Wakanda, which he felt were a major factor in the film’s success.
Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival, Mr Coogler said: “Oh man. That would be amazing if the opportunity came up. They did it in the comic book-version.
“We have these actresses who could easily carry their own movie. Some of them have before. We were so fortunate. I would watch a movie with them!”
Black Panther stars several strong female stars including Lupita Nyong’o, who plays an undercover agent and love interest of T’Challa – the leader of the fictional African nation of Wakanda.
The film also stars Danai Gurira, as a warrior leader, and Letitia Wright, T’Challa’s sister and technical genius.
Mr Coogler explained one of his favourite parts of the movie is when the women characters take charge after T’Challa is thrown off a cliff to his apparent death.
“I think you could argue the women are more important. There’s a whole section of the film where T’Challa is out of the movie and you’re just following the women,” he said.
“That’s one of my favourite parts the movie when I watched it, and I didn’t expect that.”
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has already confirmed a sequel of Black Panther.
He told Entertainment Weekly in March: “Nothing specific to reveal, other than to say we absolutely will do that.
“One of the favourite pastimes at Marvel Studios is sitting around on a Part One and talking and dreaming about what we would do in a Part Two.
“There have been plenty of those conversations as we were putting together the first Black Panther. We have ideas and a pretty solid direction on where we want to head with the second one.”
However, it will be a while until the sequel is released, as Captain Marvel and Avengers 4 are both coming out in 2019 so it could be at least 2020 until we take a second trip to Wakanda.
Black Panther has made $1 billion (£736 million) at the global box office.
The feature film is now the fifth Marvel movie in history to cross that mark and was the first film of 2018 to hit $1 billion worldwide.
The blockbuster has also broken various records, it notched the fifth-highest-opening weekend in movie history, the third-highest gross in history for a film released over a four-day weekend.
