Bohemian Rhapsody and Rami Malek overcome bad reviews with HUGE Golden Globes nominations

The Queen biopic has proven to be a huge hit at the box office despite a mixed response from reviewers. But its popularity with fans has helped it to break records, and now the Golden Globes nominations feature it in two major categories. Rami Malek had best prepare his finest awards show suits.

Bohemian Rhapsody is nominated in one of the very top categories: Best Motion Picture – Drama.

What’s more, Malek is up for Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama; a feat he has also been tipped to pull off at the Oscars.

Bohemian Rhapsody’s competition for the top honour is Black Panther, BlackKklansman, If Beale Street Could Talk and A Star Is Born.

Malek, meanwhile, is up against Willem Defoe, Lucas Hedges, John David Washington and Bradley Cooper.

It’s a strong year for films with a musical edge: A Star Is Born is also nominated across the board.

Lady Gaga and Cooper are up for the acting trophies; while Cooper is also up for Best Director.

Meanwhile Mary Poppins Returns has also picked up some love: Emily Blunt is up for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy, and Lin-Manuel Miranda is up for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy.

That sequel is also in contention for Original Score, and Best Picture – Musical or Comedy.

Whether Malek can also get an Oscars nomination remains to be seen: unlike the Golden Globes, the Oscars does not have separate races for Drama and Comedy, so the competition will be tougher.

Still, bookies do favour his chances of getting a nod.

The Golden Globes will take place on Sunday, January 6, 2019.
