Bohemian Rhapsody: Freddie left Mary MORE than a house & some of his group were NOT happy
Yes, he referred to her as his “common-law wife” and the “love of my life” but Freddie had many more partners after he split from Mary. Yet, she was the person he left the bulk of his fortune to, as well as his beloved London home. Not only that, but he ensured even more money would pour in – and that was long before the spectacular success of the movie, which is estimated to bring Mary tens of millions more. Nobody has ever denied the incredible bond the couple shared, but Mary revealed Freddie warned her of the troubles she would face, sometimes from those closest to him.
When Freddie told her he was leaving Garden Lodge mansion in Kensington to Mary, she tried to persuade him to leave it as a memorial to his life and work for fans to visit, buh=t he was determined.
Mary recalled his words to her: “He said, ‘If things had been different, you would have been my wife and this would have been yours anyway.'”
After Freddie passed away in 1991 and his bequest was revealed, Mary said the “jealousy” of other people who had been in Freddie’s circle “hit like a bullet train.”
“Some of the fans even told me I was only the keeper of the house. That hurt. I know several of Freddie’s gay friends were surprised Freddie had left so much to me. There those who thought they should have been left the house. It was like people begrudged me having what he had left me.”
“I felt very much out of my depth really. Freddie’s staff had been like family to me, but after his death most of them had left because he’d been so generous to them. I had sleepless nights worrying about everything. I felt as if I’d done something wrong and paranoia set in.
It was also another eight years before Mary received the bulk of his money from the will and she said: “It was a worrying time. The taxman had been paid, but without the money coming through I didn’t know if I could afford to keep the house. I felt under a lot of pressure.”
However, Freddie not only left Mary the house and money, he left her the bulk of his share in all future Queen earnings.
In his will, Freddie ensured Mary would receive 50% of his share of future Queen revenue, with Freddie’s sister and parents receiving 25% each. According to reports, on the deaths of Freddie’s parents, their share also reverted to Mary, not Kashmira.
In January, it was estimated that Mary’s share of the profits from Bohemian Rhapsody‘s sensational box office triumph could bring Mary up to £45million, with the remaining Queen bandmates sharing up o £70million each.
Mary still lives in the same house. She famously never wanted to redecorate, saying: “‘Why would I want to change it? It is his taste and style. It’s beautiful. His presence is everywhere.”
Fans still come to pay their respects and remember their hero, while inside Mary guards Freddie’s memories and his secrets, as he had always wanted.
