Bohemian Rhapsody: Rami Malek wanted Freddie Mercury film to show more of THIS
Bohemian Rhapsody has taken a staggering Queen-sized chunk of the global box office this year. The biopic has rocked past $600million worldwide and fans still can’t get enough of seeing their much-missed idols back on the screen. However, many critics have attacked the film for taking a soft approach to teh more difficult aspects of Freddie’s life and death. Malek has openly addressed this issue but also revealed the one thing he wishes the film had explored more.
Malek told The Hollywood Reporter about the decisions the filmmakers made about what to include and not: “They would love to deliver the entire Freddie Mercury story, but we have two hours…
“In those two hours I know that those men want to celebrate Freddie’s life, and there was definitely a cognizant effort not to make this a hedonistic, salacious film.”
The actor acknowleded that the decisions of what to include frustrated some people: “I know there’s always going to be polarizing aspects to this film. There’s no way around it. You can do the other version of this film, but we needed to focus on a finite period of time and we always wanted to bookend the film with [the] Live Aid [concert]. So it provided some obstacles that were difficult to navigate.”
However, he remains very proud of what the film did show and what it captured about Freddie’s life and what he meant to milions of fans.
Malek added: ” I think you have to shine a light on certain aspects of his life, to show how defiant he was as an artist and what stereotypes he destroyed. He, and the band, they brought down every convention of what music should be and how human beings should act in public. He’s a revolutionary in that he just refused to be segregated or marginalized in any way.”
But the star admits there was one special paert of Freddie’s life he wishes had been a greater part of the film.
Malek said: ” I think we all would have loved to show more of Freddie’s relationship with Jim [Hutton] toward the end of his life. That relationship is absolutely gorgeous, and if I had it my way, boy, would I love to tack on another hour to this film and fill in a few gaps.”
The film surprised many who had not known just how important his relationship with former girlfriend Mary Austin remained throughout his life, but he also found love one more time.
After years of struggling with his sexuality and then with his HIV diagnosis, Freddie finally found a lasting relationship with Irish hairdresser Hutton who he dated from 1985 until his death in 1991.
