Bohemian Rhapsody: Watch Mary Austin remember Freddie and ask 'WHERE is his memorial?'
It seems incredible there is still no official memorial for Freddie. Not just to mark his incredible impact on popular entertainment, but also a place for fans to go and pay their respects. Only Mary apparently knows where his ashes lie, in accordance with his wishes, and there is a plinth at West London Crematorium, where his memorial service was held. Even Mary has publicly asked why there is no UK memorial. Watch her pay tribute to her friend and former partner in a moving meeting with fans outside his house on the anniversary of his death.
Bohemian Rhapsody showed Freddie and Mary living opposite each other to the end. He left his London mansion, Garden Lodge at 1 Logan Place, to Mary in his will and she still lives there with her family.
It is a place of pilgrimage for fans, especially on the anniversary of the star’s death on November 24, 1991.
One year after Freddie died tragically young at 45, Mary met with fans outside the walls of the home and told them: “It’s great, it’s wonderful that you’re here. I’m just so sorry that there isn’t a memorial or somewhere for you to pay your respects.”
Asked about where she thought a memorial should go, Mary replied: “I don’t know. I just wish there would be one somewhere. I wish the persons responsible would just hurry up and get one organised.
“It’s been a long time. Even the poorest of the poor have one. It’s about time he had one, too.”
She also shared the profound way the anniversary affected her, that she almost felt she was back there on the day he died holding his hand. Mary was one of the close group who kept vigil in the last days. Freddie’s close friend Dave Clark of the Dave Clark Five was there when he died in the early evening and called Mary, who then let the family know.
Mary told the gathered fans: “Today I think I was still with him… and so for me, I’m still there holding his hand…. It won’t be until about seven this evening, when I received the phone call, that it will hit home.”
Asked how she was coping, Mary replied: “The same as any of you I suppose. You guys have found it hard, haven’t you? We all know how we feel so at least we can empathise.”
Despite almost never talking to the press or in public about their relationship, Mary remains beloved of the fans who recognise the incredible love she shared with their hero.
Freddie called her “Love of My Life” in public and in song and that love continues to inspire.
As for a memorial, there is a famous statue of Freddie Mercury in Montreux, where the band recorded their final album, Days of Our Lives.
