Bohemian Rhapsody: Who is Jim Hutton? Who played Freddie Mercury's lover?

Despite its description, the Bohemian Rhapsody movie is less an in-depth biopic and more a feel-good flick. Though the studio wrote “the film traces the meteoric rise of the band through their iconic songs and revolutionary sound”, the movie focusses more on the music than the member’s real-life struggles. Given the 12A rating, this is hardly a surprise, and the level of accuracy has been bolstered by the production team, which included Queen’s original band members Brian May and Roger Taylor as consultants.

Who is Jim Hutton?

Jim Hutton was Irish, born in January 1949, and raised in County Carlow.

He was a hairdresser who was in a relationship with Mercury for seven years before Mercury’s death in 1991.

Hutton died in January 2010 at the age of 60, from a long battle with cancer.

But before he died, Hutton wrote a memoir about his love affair with the Queen frontman titled Mercury and Me.

In the Bohemian Rhapsody movie, Jim Hutton and Mercury met when Hutton was hired as a server at a party at a nightclub.

The scene was a meet-cute, in which Hutton at first rejects Mercury, but they talk until late into the night.

In reality, Hutton was working as a hairdresser at London’s Savoy Hotel at the time.

According to a 2006 interview in The Times, the pair met in the 1980s at a gay bar in London.

His relationship with Mercury began in 1985 and they remained together until Mercury’s death in November 1991.

He also told The Times that during their relationship he had spotted Mercury flirting with others, and once saw him leave his Kensington flat with another man.

Though the relationship was rocky, Hutton was devoted to Mercury.

Hutton cared for Mercury during his battle with HIV and AIDS.

Who played Jim Hutton in the Bohemian Rhapsody movie?

Aaron McCusker took on the role of Jim Hutton for the Freddie Mercury biopic.

McCusker is best known for his role as s Jamie Maguire in Shameless.

His has a role in the upcoming short film Secret Child, which is based on the memoir of a young boy who grew up in the Regina Coeli home in Dublin.

The official synopsis calls Bohemian Rhapsody “a foot-stomping celebration of Queen, their music and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury.
