Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his partner Carrie Symonds are engaged and are expecting a baby in early summer, the couple announced on Saturday 29 February.

The communications and PR guru announced on Instagram that she and Boris got engaged at the end of last year and are expecting their first child together in the summer, adding she felt “incredibly blessed”.

Boris and Carrie made British history last year when they became the first unmarried couple to move into Downing Street, but with the latest news, Downing Street won’t be occupied by an unmarried pair for long.

Taking to her private Instagram account on Saturday, alongside a photograph of herself and Boris, Carrie wrote: I wouldn’t normally post this kind of thing on here but I wanted my friends to find out from me …

“Many of you already know but for my friends that still don’t, we got engaged at the end of last year and we’ve got a baby hatching early summer. Feel incredibly blessed.”

This marriage will be the Prime Minister’s third – after he divorced his first wife in 1993 and is now estranged from second wife Marina Wheeler.

According to the BBC, earlier this month, a court heard that the Prime Minister and Marina Wheeler were preparing to end their marriage after reaching an agreement over money.

Marina and Boris, who have four children together, separated in 2018 after marrying in 1993.

The delay in announcing their engagement could have been sparked by the divorce negotiations between Boris and Marina, considering the Prime Minster popped the question in December 2019.

DON’T MISS

However, since the news broke, social media has been flooded with congratulatory comments from the British public and MPs.

Although Sajid Javid quit as chancellor earlier this month after a dispute with Boris Johnson, he was among the first to congratulate the Prime Minister and his fiancée on their “wonderful news.”

Former leader of the Scottish Conservatives Ruth Davidson also offered her congratulations, while pregnant Tory MP Siobhan Baillie welcomed Carrie to “the magical bump gang”.

Currently, it has been suggested that the pair will be focusing on preparing themselves and Downing Street to welcome their baby in the early summer, so their wedding plans are taking a back seat at the moment.

But the announcement of their forthcoming wedding means Boris will become the first Prime Minister to divorce and then marry in office for nearly 200 years.

Speculations of her pregnancy first began early last week when people spotted Carrie slipping quietly out of the back of No 10 rather than opting for the famous front door.

She was seen wearing an over-sized black coat, left loose at the front so that it concealed her usually slender frame.

Many were quick to suggest that she was, in fact, hiding a growing baby bump, and only days later she confirmed the speculations.

However, the latest news has left the Prime Minister’s estranged wife, Marina Wheeler, “in pieces”.

According to reports, friends claimed Mariana was struggling to come to terms with the latest development and was “crushed” by the news.
