Captain Marvel end credits scene explained: How many end credit scenes are there?
Captain Marvel has been subject to the backlash of Internet trolls since the film was announced. But the film has proven itself with a formidable 82 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans heading to cinemas this weekend who want to plan their escape from the theatre quickly should read on…
How many end credits scenes does Captain Marvel have and what do they mean?
The movie has two scenes, one in the middle and one at the end of the credits.
Warning: spoilers ahead.
If you’re pressed for time, the mid-credits scene – which depicts four of the surviving Avengers in their lab – is worth staying for.
Captain America, Black Widow, Bruce Banner, and James Rhodes are despondent at the start.
The pager Nick Fury used at the end of Avengers: Infinity War has run out of battery.
CAPTAIN MARVEL POWERS: HOW DID CAPTAIN MARVEL GET HER POWERS?
Despite their best efforts, it has stopped sending the signal – a signal none of them recognise.
But it seems the signal stopping was less to do with battery failure and more with the sudden appearance of Captain Marvel herself.
As Black Widow turns, a bedraggled looking Captain Marvel stands and demands: “Where’s Fury?” The scene then cuts to black.
Beyond a blatant tease for the upcoming Avengers: Endgame, the mid-credits scene only gives us a little information.
Tasha Robinson at The Verge speculates the scene is good news for the Avengers.
She writes: “The scene… suggests Avengers: Endgame isn’t going to spend a lot of time teasing Captain Marvel’s arrival, or setting up a dramatic action segment where she needs to miraculously show up to physically rescue the Avengers, who’ve done okay without her thus far.
“She’s clearly meant to be important to Endgame, but Marvel fans have worried about her, as the new kid in town, suddenly overshadowing the MCU’s existing characters who have years of shared history across multiple movies behind them.
“That overshadowing certainly could still happen, but the frankness of this scene — the lack of big dramatic buildup for this meeting — suggests a quieter integration with the existing cast.”
CAPTAIN MARVEL AGE RATING: HOW OLD DO YOU HAVE TO BE TO SEE IT?
But what about the second end credits scene?
Though full of humour, the second end credits scene is not necessarily required watching.
The final post-credits scene, like Ant-Man and the Wasp’s, is funnier in tone.
The scene finds Goose – who has now been established as a Flerken and not a domesticated house cat – strolling across Fury’s desk.
Goose begins to cough up a hairball but instead, he spits out the Tesseract he swallowed earlier in the movie.
The reappearance of the Tesseract is, of course, integral to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s history and showing Goose coughing it up is both a moment of humour and an important moment of continuity in the MCU.
Captain Marvel is now playing in cinemas.
