Captain Marvel: Is Jude Law REALLY Mar-Vell? Star faces grilling in TV interview

The actor is promoting Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, in which he plays a young Albus Dumbledore.

And when discussing the level of secrecy around the Wizarding World movie with Stephen Colbert, conversation naturally turned to the MCU.

“I just completed a film for Marvel, Captain Marvel,” he said – prompting Colbert to ask if speculation that he’s playing Mar-Vell is accurate.

“I can’t tell you who I am,” he said.

When Colbert pushed “so you aren’t Mar-Vell or you are Mar-Vell?”, Law repeated: “I can’t tell you who I am. Nice try.”

The fact he isn’t squashing the speculation with a simple “no” indicates that Mar-Vell may at least be significant to his identity in the film – or someone else’s.

Getting back on track with talking about secrecy, he continued: “I think it might be a British [vs] American thing… with Fantastic Beasts, they’re like, ‘we assume you’re not going to give any of these secrets away. If you do we’ll tell you not to again, and then we may quietly kill you.’

“With Marvel, it’s like, ‘DON’T YOU F**KING TELL ANYBODY OUT THIS!’”

He added: “There was a guy hired on set: you step out on set and he’s like, ‘PUT THIS CLOAK ON, HIDE!’

“My children visited the set and they were like, ‘SIGN THE NDAs! WHO ARE THESE GUYS?’”

Indeed, Marvel is renowned for its privacy – which means we likely won’t know anything more about Captain Marvel until studio bosses want us to.

The first trailer for the Brie Larson-fronted blockbuster came out last month and has accrued 44 million views on YouTube, 5.3 million views on Twitter and 17 million views on Facebook.

The 1990s-set caper will introduce Carol Danvers to the MCU, before she’s then seen in Avengers 4.

The latter film recently wrapped its reshoots, and is rumoured to be called Avengers: Annihilation – though this has not been confirmed.

Other Marvel movies in the pipeline include Spider-Man: Far From Home; out next summer.

Captain Marvel is out in March 2019. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is out on November 16.
