Stan Lee is one of the most prolific people to cameo in Marvel features. The Marvel creator has appeared in more than 50 Marvel Universe vehicles, from TV shows to films. He started making comics in 1939 and went on to create some of the most iconic superheroes ever.

What theory does Stan Lee’s Captain Marvel cameo prove?

WARNING: Not only does this contain spoilers but it is also very confusing.

Michael Walsh of Nerdist has pulled together an incredible theory about Lee’s role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

First, you have to know what his cameo in Captain Marvel is.

Lee is on an overground train carriage as Captain Marvel walks through, searching for a Skrull.

CAPTAIN MARVEL AGE RATING: HOW OLD DO YOU HAVE TO BE TO SEE IT?

She looks down at a man reading a script, whose cover has the word ‘MALLRATS’ in big letters on the front.

Captain Marvel pulls down the script to reveal Lee reading it from his seat.

So why does this matter?

Well, Lee himself has a cameo in the 1993 Kevin Smith movie Mallrats.

In Mallrats, Lee plays himself – and he’s mentioned as the creator of The Hulk and Spider-Man.

CAPTAIN MARVEL VS SUPERMAN: WHO IS THE MORE POWERFUL SUPERHERO?

So in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the movie Mallrats exists – you can watch it and see Lee playing himself.

Walsh explains: “If Stan Lee exists in the Marvel Cinematic Universe where he created the comic book characters Bruce Banner and Peter Parker, then they went from being his fictional ideas to fully formed, fully realized people in that same world.

“That means in the MCU, Stan Lee, famed comic book writer, was either a prophet or a literal god.”

This theory is only given more credence by Lee’s own cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

In the cameo, he is in conversation with The Watchers, whose purpose is to watch over the multiverses of the Marvel series.

AVENGERS ENDGAME: WHY NICK FURY WAITED SO LONG TO CALL CAPTAIN MARVEL

He is telling them about his various ‘lives’ or ‘roles’ on Earth, referencing his cameo as a Fed-Ex delivery man in Captain America: Civil War.

So, Stan Lee as we know him clearly also exists in the very universe he created and populated with superheroes.

At the press conference for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Marvel boss Kevin Feige was asked what the cameo meant.

Feige said: “Stan Lee clearly exists above and apart from the reality of all the films.

He added the cameo proved: “he’s this same character who’s popped up in all these films, the same person.”

We can’t think of a better tribute to the comics legend than this theory being true.

Captain Marvel is now playing in cinemas.
