Captain Marvel: Who will Annette Benning play in new Marvel movie?

Annette Benning is joining the cast of Captain Marvel in MCU’s first female-led film.

It will be the four-time Oscar nominee’s first comic book film and will be directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck.

The film stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers – the titular hero, along with Jude Law, Ben Mendohlson and Gemma Chan.

After an accident, Danvers fuses her DNA with that of a Kree alien, giving her the powers of strength, flight and energy projection.

Jude Law will play Mar-Vell, whose DNA endows Danvers with these superhuman abilities.

Mendohlson’s role has not been confirmed, however it is likely he will play the lead villain in the movie and Gemma Chan will play Minn-Erva.

According to Hollywood Reporter, Benning will play a “scientist”.

However sources have told Variety claim she will “most likely play the superhero’s mum”.

Danvers’ mother, Marie is not a scientist in the comics, but Captain Marvel could rewrite the character for the upcoming film.

She plays a fairly minimal role in the comic but has a compelling relationship with her superhero daughter.

Star Trek: Discovery’s Kenneth Mitchell is confirmed to play Joseph Danvers, Carol’s father.

Captain Marvel is not Benning’s first official superhero credit, as she was originally cast as Catwoman in Batman Returns.

Being told The Philippine Inquirer in 2016: “I would have loved to play Catwoman.

“But I got pregnant.”

Instead Michelle Pfeiffer took the title tole and was an iconic choice for the Tim Burton film.

Captain Marvel will be released on March 8, 2019.
