Captain Tom Moore reaches NUMBER ONE in charts after incredible NHS charity campaign
The army veteran, aged 99, was in a tense head-to-head with The Weeknd after the single was released last weekend. Captain Tom has now become the first almost-centenarian in history to do so, breaking yet another record following his staggering JustGiving fundraising effort. He will be number one on his 100th birthday.
Announcing the news on Twitter, Michael Ball said alongside an emoji showing a head exploding: “IT’S NO. 1!!!! I can’t believe it @captaintommoore. You have done it sir. History has been made.
“You are No1 for your 100th birthday. I couldn’t be more proud, thrilled, excited and grateful.
“Thank you so so much to EVERYONE who supported us. What an achievement.”
He finished the message with a praying emoji and two hearts.
Captain Tom, speaking from his home in Bedfordshire, where he lives with daughter Hannah and her family, said: “What wonderful news to receive today, a No.1 single and a record breaker too – my grandchildren can’t believe I am a chart-topper!
“I have to thank Michael Ball, the NHS Voices of Care Choir and everyone behind the scenes, who shared their talents and expertise in order to raise money for the NHS, to whom we owe so much.
“And, of course, the public for buying the single and donating – we’re in this together, and I am forever grateful for your support. And this just proves ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’”
Michael Ball, who today also achieves his first ever No.1 single (‘Love Changes Everything’ reached No.2 in 1989), was delighted to lend his voice to the track, adding: “This is the most extraordinary thing, one of the proudest moments of my career.
“But it’s not about me it’s about Captain Tom, thank you for giving him a No.1 on his 100th birthday!”
Earlier this week the decorated war veteran was neck-and-neck with The Weeknd and his latest single Blinding Lights.
Captain Tom and Michael’s version of You’ll Never Walk Alone is available to download for 99p on Amazon and iTunes, with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to his 100th Birthday Walk in aid of NHS Charities Together.
The 99-year-old WW2 veteran turns 100 on April 30, with Michael saying getting him to number one would be an incredible birthday present.
He called duetting with Captain Tom “one of the single greatest honours” of his career and said: “He is the most charming man you could ever wish to meet.”
“Hopefully he can now add singing star to his many talents.
Earlier this week Michael said it would be “wonderful” to get the veteran to number one as a gift for his milestone birthday.
A week ago, he completed his final 10 laps with the world’s media there to capture the moment.
Captain Tom has decided to keep walking as long as people are donating and has become the biggest single fundraiser in British history.
The veteran served as an officer in the British Army in Burma during the Second World War before later becoming an instructor in armoured warfare.
Last weekend, his duet with Michael made it to number one in Global’s Official Big Top 40.
