How are you feline? Looking for something purrrfectly delightful? OK, ok, we’ll stop with the pussy puns but fans will be absolutely thrilled to see the first incredible took at the making of Cats. A host of huge stars are bringing Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic musical to the big screen, from Taylor Swift and Judy Dench (rarely used in the same sentence) to James Corden, Idris Elba, Ian McKellen and Rebel Wilson. Incredible sets recreate the world from a cat’s eye view, digital technology adds the fur and world-class dancers and members of the Royal Ballet add their talents. “This is an event,” says Hudson.

The film hits cinemas on December 20.

It will be the perfect antidote for anyone not wishing to beam off to a galaxy far, far away when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker thunders into view the same week.

The show is most famous for the huge showstopper Memory. It won’t be sung by Swift, on screen. The hours will go to the belting vocals of Jennifer Hudson, so be prepared for spontaneous ovations in cinemas across the land, rather like what happened when she did Dreamgirls.

There is one fascinating fact about that song and another member of the cast which might just shock you…

Back in 1981 when the original musical was about to debut in London, the star playing Grizabella (the ageing cat who sings Memory) was none other than Judi Dench. She is perhaps not who you think of for such a powerhouse number, but Dench’s version was more about the performance and the character than belting the big notes.

However, audiences never got to see it. An unfortunate injury during rehearsals forced her to drop out and Elaine Paige stepped in at the last moment. The rest is history.

Dench is putting another spin on a classic role this time, however, playing one of the main male cats.

The Dame will play Old Deuteronomy, wth Swift as Bombalurina, Corden as Buster Jones and Elba as Macavity.

The A-listers don’t stop there with the tantalising prospect of Ray Winstone as Growltiger, Jason Derulo as Rum Tum Tugger and Rebel Wilson as Jennanydots.

Based on Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot, the original production ran for 21 years and won Olivier and Tony Awards. It has subsequently be seen by over 81 million people in over 50 countries.
