Clueless remake: Will there really be a new Clueless movie?

Clueless, the 1995 teen classic, was both a blockbuster smash and a cult favourite.

Starring Alicia Silverstone as Cher Horowitz and Stacey Dash as Dionne, the movie epitomised 90s teen culture.

The film spawned its own subculture for 90s kids and beyond, offering a glimpse into a world of oversized mobile phones and monochrome ensembles.

The original Clueless was a modern day take on the Jane Austen novel Emma, with Cher as the titular character trying to set up a romance between two teachers who finds love for herself in the process.

Will there be a new Clueless movie?

Twenty-three years after its debut, Clueless is poised to be introduced a new generation of teens.

Tracy Oliver, director of Girls Trip, responded to the news story via Twitter.

Retweeting a Deadline Hollywood story, Oliver wrote: “Crazy excited to be producing a *new* take on one of my favourite movies of all time, #Clueless, with the hilarious and super talented @MarqRobinson writing it. As if.”

How new this take remains to be confirmed.

Marq Robinson is a writer and story editor on Netflix’s GLOW, which seems like a natural fit for Clueless.

Whether the remake is still set in 90s Beverly Hills or updated to the 2000s is unknown.

The plot of the original movie follows Cher, a shallow, rich and socially successful teen at the top of her Beverly Hills high school’s pecking scale.

Cher fancies herself as a matchmaker and decides to set two of her teachers up for a relationship.

Having successfully matched her tutors, Cher decides to give the new student Tai, a hopelessly klutzy teen girl, played by the late Brittany Murphy, a makeover.

Tai becomes more popular than Cher, and Cher realizes that her disapproving ex-stepbrother Josh Lucas (Paul Rudd) was right about how misguided she was.

The result? Cher realises she’s fallen for him.

As her and Tai’s relationship reaches its breaking point, Cher reflects on her life.

She begins making awkward but sincere efforts to live a more purposeful life, and Cher and Josh eventually admit their feelings for one another.

By the end of the movie, the tutors Cher set up get married, and Cher’s friendships with Tai and Dionne are repaired and stronger than ever.

Cher herself closes the movie by winning a $200 bet for catching the bouquet at the wedding.

She embraces Josh, and they kiss.

The original film’s director Amy Heckerling studied real Beverly Hills high school students to get the slang.

The infamous Clueless quote “as if!” came directly from Heckerling’s study of these teenagers.

Whether as if makes it into the new adaptation remains to be seen.
