Coronavirus map LIVE: Garden centres to open as first steps of PM’s lockdown plan revealed

Ministers have made it clear Boris Johnson‘s evening address tomorrow will not be to fully lift the coronavirus lockdown but he will announce his ‘road map’ plan. Garden centres will be allowed to open from Wednesday, May 13, Boris Johnson is expected to say. Visitors will need to ensure they adhere to social distancing rules, like in supermarkets.

The delay of the reopening to Wednesday is so managers have time to ensure the centres are within the guidelines for social distancing.

Minister Mark Drakeford, has said: “Our second planned change to the regulations is to allow garden centres to reopen, provided the social distancing rules can be applied.”

Environment Secretary George Eustice made it clear at Downing Street yesterday there would not be any “dramatic overnight changes”.

8.07am update: Fears for summer holidays if Government announces a 14 day quarantine

Tour operators such as Jet2 Holidays and Tui were planning on re-opening from the middle of June.

However new quarantine measures could delay this by weeks, if not months.

Karen Dee, chief executive of the Airport Operators’ Association has said: “Quarantine would not only have a devastating impact on the UK aviation industry, but also on the wider economy”.

7.18am update: Government fears public could ignore lockdown to enjoy sunny Saturday

Minister George Eustice told people to stay at home during the bank holiday weekend.

Yesterday parks across the country were busy as Britons tried to enjoy the sun.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan tweeted: “We do know that Londoners are still catching the virus, being hospitalised and dying from COVID-19.

“Please, please follow the rules this weekend.”
