Green had been an actor with minor TV and film roles since his 1979 debut in The Great Detective, before his huge breakthrough came relatively late in his career at the age of 38.

His moving performance as Kicking Bird in 1990 made him a worldwide star, although he lost out on the Oscar to Joe Pesci in Goodfellas.

Now 65, Greene has worked consistently ever since in blockbusters like Die Hard With A Vengeance all the way to 2017’s Molly’s Game with Jessica Chastain.

In one of his most notable roles, he brought dignity and pathos to the powerful prison drama The Green Mile.

Although John Coffey’s death broke audiences’ hearts, the quiet acceptance of fellow death row inmate Arlen Bitterbuck as he finally faces his fate also brings a lump to the throat.

The actor was unforgettable as he tells Tom Hank’s compassionate warden of his regrets, his happy memories and his idea of heaven.

Greene had a recurring role on Murder, She Wrote as Sheriff Keeyani and Northern Exposure as Leonard. He appeared in the Twilight Saga as the wise old American Indian Harry Clearwater.

He continues to work constantly and at 63 he finally won a Best Supporting Actor gong at the 2016 RNCI Red Nation Awards for his role in the long-running detective show Longmire.

In 2017 he also starred in the surprise box office hit Wind River with Avenges Infinity war stars Elizabeth Olsen and Jereny Renner.
