Donald Trump's North Korea threat proves he 'doesn't know what he's doing', expert claims

President Trump promised to rain “fire and fury” on Kim Jong-un’s hermit kingdom after it was revealed his nuclear henchman had developed warheads small enough to fit inside an inter continental ballistic missiles.

Last month North Korea successfully test fired its second Hwasong 14 ICBM, with analysts claiming the rocket could potentially strike the heart of the US continent.

But Mark Fitzpatrick, the executive director of non-nuclear proliferation organisation IISS Americas, has claimed the President’s rhetoric is simply “bluster”

Speaking on Newsnight, Mr Fitzpatrick warned the hasty threat could lead to all out war between North Korean and the United States.

He said: “This sounds like blustering.

“It sounds like the president doesn’t exactly know how to respond and when he doesn’t know he responds with bluster.

“The United States is not going to attack North Korea, North Korea is not going to attack the United States.

“But these kinds of statements and the kind of statements North Koreans make ratchet up the tensions, and could lead to misperceptions which could lead to war.”

It comes amid reports North Korea could have up to 60 nuclear weapons, more than three times the number previously estimated.

And the country has claimed it is “carefully examining” plans to strike the US territory of Guam in a preemptive strike following President Trump’s furious tirade against the young dictator.

Asked what North Korea could do to the US, Mr Fitzpatrick added: “They could start a war, a conventional war that could soon escalate into a nuclear war.

“They could try to attack US bases in Japan with a nuclear weapon and then threaten to attack the continental United States’ cities if the United States intervenes.

“That’s the worst case scenario.”

Two US B-1B bombers have arrived in Guam and are prepared to “fight tonight” following threats from Kim Jong-un’s military commanders.

A US Air Force pilot said: “How we train is how we fight and the more we interface with our allies, the better prepared we are to fight tonight.”

“The B-1 is a long-range bomber that is well-suited for the maritime domain and can meet the unique challenges of the Pacific.”

Guam is home to approximately 6,000 US troops and is about 2,100 miles from North Korea.
