Based on Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi novel, the first of a two-part movie adaptation of Dune is coming out this year. Blade Runner 2049’s Denis Villeneuve is directing the epic. And now the first look at Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides has been revealed.

Vanity Fair have shared an exclusive first look, which shows a thoughtful Paul by a beach on the planet Caladan with ships behind him in the air.

Dressed in black, it’s hard not to compare him to Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren from Star Wars.

Paul is “a child of privilege” who leaves the oceanic world of Caladan for the desert planet of Arrakis aka Dune.

There House Atreides has to face House Harkonnen in something of a sci-fi Game of Thrones.

On playing the lead, Chalamet said: “The immediately appealing thing about Paul was the fact that in a story of such detail and scale and world-building, the protagonist is on an anti-hero’s-journey of sorts.

“He thinks he’s going to be sort of a young general studying his father and his leadership of a fighting force before he comes of age, hopefully, a decade later, or something like that.”

With the first coverage of Dune out this week, presumably, a trailer isn’t that far off.

Earlier this year Trailer Track predicted the first teaser would likely arrive in early summer.

There has been a lot of hype concerning Villeneuve’s adaptation of Dune.

Back in January, the first images and footage were hailed as “spectacular”.

While the look and feel was compared to both The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars.

Canadian author Brian FH Clement tweeted: “I was in a work meeting today and got to see some promo/preview footage of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, and I am ON BOARD with it. I think it looks fantastic.”

Clement continued: “I’m not exaggerating when I say a lot of people will have goosebumps/tears when they see this movie (I might!). Heck, when they see the footage I saw they will.

“To be honest, it’s not exactly how I pictured the universe of Dune when I first read the book (it never will be) but that’s a good thing.

“I really like the look Villeneuve has created and I think it’s going to be spectacular.

“I think this will blow people away the way LOTR did 20 years ago, the way Star Wars did 40 years ago. It’s not Jodorowsky or Lynch, but maybe Villeneuve has filmed the unfilmable.”

Herbert’s 1965 original Dune novel was first adapted for the big screen in 1984.

This version of the sci-fi epic flopped, yet went on to become a cult classic.

Aside from Chalamet, Villeneuve’s 2020 adaptation has an all-star cast including Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgard, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, Jason Momoa and Javier Bardem.

Dune will be released in UK cinemas on December 18, 2020.
