Ed Sheeran HITS BACK at claims he used a backing track at Glastonbury 2017
The singer received generally positive reviews for his set on the Pyramid Stage on Sunday, armed by just a guitar and a loop pedal.
The full sound, without a visible backing band, seemed to get some fans’ backs up, but Sheeran took to Twitter to hit back at the accusations against his performance.
“Never thought I’d have to explain it, but everything I do in my live show is live,” he wrote.
“It’s a loop station, not a backing track. Please google x.”
Still, he seemed to consider his performance to be a success; adding: “Anyway, great night, great atmosphere, family, friends, fun. Love you all x.”
His first message racked up an astronomical 30,000 Retweets and 139,000 Likes as fans rushed to back him up.
The performance received warm reviews, with The Guardian giving four stars and summarising that he was “thrillingly raw and defiantly alone”.
They added: “The guitar and loop pedal set up works very much in his favour: it frequently lends his music a rawness and edge that isn’t there on record.”
The Independent were less keen, issuing only a two star verdict.
“Will the sceptics be won over? Probably not,” they argued.
“Unlike other Glastonbury pop performers such as Adele and Coldplay, Sheeran did little to win over the naysayers – despite his talk of it before the show – and instead gave little more than the basic show his fans, and critics, assumed he would, even finishing half an hour before expected.”
