Emma Woodhouse is one of Jane Austen’s more controversial heroines. Her desire for stimulation in a society which is far to small for her comes out in her being quite the meddler, and sometimes worse. In this exclusive clip shared with Express.co.uk, Emma uses her matchmaking powers to change her friend’s life forever.

Those who know the novel of Emma well, will remember how Emma Woodhouse (played in this adaptation by Anya Taylor-Joy) is very much the big fish in the small pond.

Living in Highbury, she and her hypochondriacal father (Bill Nighy) have a fairly simple life, which sadly means she becomes bored and lacking in stimulation.

She is far more intelligent than many in her company, barring the dashing Mr Knightley (Johnny Flynn) and is often forced to find other ways to amuse herself.

Usually, this leads her to start matchmaking, and after successfully setting her governess Miss Taylor up with the older widower Mr Weston, she must find someone new to set up.

Enter Harriet Smith, a young, innocent girl who is not necessarily the sharpest tool in the box.

After meeting Emma, however, Harriet is given the right to believe her prospects, despite her coming from unknown birth, are sky-high, meaning she need not settle for any old bloke who will walk her down the aisle.

The first man who makes moves towards Harriet is Robert Martin, a farmer who has told Harriet to stay with his mother and sisters.

In this time the pair grew very close, and Harriet seems as infatuated with him as he with her: until Emma has something to say about it.

In this exclusive clip shared with Express.co.uk, Harriet is asking Emma what she should do when her almost lover, Mr Martin, writes her to ask for her hand in marriage.

She turns to Emma and says: “You think I ought to refuse him.”

Harriet is crestfallen, but Emma does not want to seem as though she is pushing her friend towards something she does not wish to do.

As a result, she slyly tells her friend: “I lay it down as a general rule, Harriet, that if a woman doubts whether she should accept man or not, she certainly ought tor refuse him.”

Harriet is confused, hoping her friend would have given her more forthright counsel, and replies: “Perhaps it is safer. Do you think I had better say, ‘no’?”

Emma, trying to keep her thinly veiled desires covered in a shroud of neutrality, replies: “Not for the world would I advise you either way.

“You must be the best judge of your own happiness.”

Emma walks over to the window, hoping her cryptic comment will lead her friend to make the “right” decision and look to tying herself with another man, the village parson Mr Elton.

She stares out of the window, waiting for her friend to feel somewhat shamed into making the decision which would keep Emma most entertained, and most required in the matchmaking stakes.

Harriet, in a stuttering, downcast way, finally says: “I have now quite determined, and really almost made up my mind, to refuse Mr Martin.”

This is only one of the early examples of Emma’s sometimes naughty interventions into her friends’ lives, and the rest of the film shows these continue in a big way.

Who is in the cast of the new adaptation of Emma?

Playing Emma Woodhouse is Anya Taylor-Joy, known for her roles in Split and The Witch.

What is Emma about?

The official synopsis from Universal reads: “Jane Austen’s beloved comedy about finding your equal and earning your happy ending is reimagined in this delicious new film adaptation of Emma.

“Handsome, clever and rich, Emma Woodhouse is a restless “queen bee” without rivals in her sleepy little English town.

“In this glittering satire of social class, Emma must navigate her way through the challenges of growing up, misguided matches and romantic missteps to realise the love that has been there all along.”

Emma is out in cinemas on Valentine’s Day, February 14
