When the Harry Potter series came to an end, fans mourned the end of an entire magical world.

But with JK Rowling’s prequel films Fantastic Beasts, a brand new era of Harry Potter movies are gracing the cinemas.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, the second in the prequel franchise, may have a controversial cast but its popularity hasn’t waned.

The trailer shows all the magic you expect but with a darker tone than its predecessor.

What is the Fantastic Beasts 2 rating?

So far, the movie itself has not received a rating from the British Board of Film Classification.

However, some predictions can be made about its potential age rating.

The trailers have all, but one, been rated PG, with the odd one out receiving a 12A rating.

Common Sense Media predicts the movie will receive a PG-13 rating in America.

This correlates with a 12A rating in the UK, which means in the UK no one under 12 can see the movie alone.

If accompanied by an adult, however, those younger than 12 years old may attend.

For Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, anything more than a 12A rating might seriously damage their box office takings, as the Harry Potter oeuvre includes both young and old.

The first Fantastic Beasts movie was rated 12A for mild language and threats.

BBFC specifically cited: “There are scenes in which dark forces threaten or kill human characters, some of which include a brief focus on dead humans’ faces.

“In one scene, a woman sentenced to death is shown visions of her past to try to force her to die.

“There are also some intense scenes in which dark forces threaten and destroy parts of the city; however, these are neither frequent nor sustained.”

For language, the BBFC cited some verbal references to physical child abuse and corporal punishment and mild bad language.

Given the darker tone, there may be more for the BBFC to grapple with in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, but these shouldn’t push the movie over into a 15 rating.

Common Sense Media wrote: “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald continues the adventures of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) as he gets caught up in the war between Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) and evil wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp).

CSM points out the new series is darker in tone than the previous Harry Potter movies and could include more violence and frightening moments.

They go on to say: “This will probably be best for tweens and teens, but parents of younger Potter fans might have trouble keeping kids away.”

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald will be out in UK and US cinemas on November 16, 2018.
