Halloween movie: The 15 SCARIEST horror movie characters – you won't believe who is FIRST

2018 has been a great year for horror.

From Hereditary to The Nun to the newest release Halloween, fans of frights have plenty to choose from.

But these new movies have been built on a history of classic, terrifying horror movies.

A survey conducted by Vue cinemas reveals the top 15 scariest fifteen horror movie characters.

3. Pennywise the Clown (It)

4. Leatherface (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre)

5. Jigsaw (Saw)

6. Michael Myers (Halloween)

7. Count Dracula

8. Jack Torrance (The Shining)

9. Samara (The Ring)

10. The Xenomorph (Alien)

11. The Thing (The Thing)

12. Jason Vorhees (Friday the 13th)

13. Frankenstein’s Monster

14. Pinhead (Hellraiser)

15. Ghostface (Scream)

In first place is Hannibal Lecter, played by the inimitable Anthony Hopkins.

The Silence of the Lambs is over twenty years old, having debuted in 1991, and goes to show age has nothing to do with fear-factor.

Michael Myers of the Halloween franchise, which has had a recent injection of life with the newest sequel, makes it in at number six.

Right behind Myers is Dracula, perhaps one of the best-known monsters of all time.

Dracula was made famous by Bela Lugosi, who played the vampire in the 1931 movie adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel.

In ninth place is the most recent addition to the list.

The Ring was released in the UK in 2003 and was the stuff of many a millennial’s nightmares.

In twenty or thirty years time there may be more names added to the list – like the Demon from The Nun.

It bears mentioning that the scariest character of all time is not a demon or a ghoul, nor a vampire or zombie.
