Harry Potter and the Cursed Child MOVIE: Did JK Rowling just tease it’s finally happening?
The Harry Potter books may have ended over a decade ago, but the narrative has been continuing through a stage production.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, the official eighth story in the series, is currently playing in London, New York, Melbourne, San Francisco, Hamburg and Toronto.
Set two decades after the Battle of Hogwarts, the two-part play follows Albus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy, the sons of Harry and Draco.
Speculation has been rife that the show will eventually be turned into a movie or two, and now those rumours have resurfaced after a recent tweet by JK Rowling.
The Harry Potter author tweeted Voldemort’s symbol and wrote: “Sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.”
However, since then Pottermore have tweeted: “There is something exciting coming later on from @CursedChildNYC, but it’s not a movie… “
The website embedded a tweet from two years ago where Rowling said there was no truth to a Cursed Child movie trilogy.
Nevertheless, there have been some simultaneous rumblings in the last day that seem to point to the contrary.
According to Muggle Net, Warner Bros, who produced the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts films, have bought the “rights present & future to all iterations of Harry Potter And The Cursed Child (thus the logo change) expect an official announcement tomorrow.”
Looking at the New York show’s rebranding with the Wizarding World logo from the film franchise, the studio could very well make a Harry Potter and the Cursed Child movie in the near future.

To add to this, We Got This Covered’s source, who correctly predicted recent news like Ewan McGregor returning as Obi-Wan Kenobi, claims that Warner Bros have every intention of making the play into two movies.
And even more excitingly, that Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint are expected to return.
Of course, a Harry Potter and the Cursed Child movie announcement from Warner Bros could be a few years off, with the news JK Rowling alluded to probably just being to do with the rebranding of the New York show that was unveiled last night in Times Square.
There’s certainly no rush to get the play adapted into films, especially if they want to maximise profits from the theatre productions before such a universal and accessible release as a movie, but the move makes sense for Warner Bros to have the rights now if Cursed Child movies are their plan.
Right now the studio have three more Fantastic Beasts movies to make, with the gap between each one increasing.
Originally, this was only supposed to be two years, but now Fantastic Beasts 3 has been pushed back to November 2021, leaving a three-year gap between the new film and the poorly received The Crimes of Grindelwald.
The four and fifth movies were set to land in 2022 and 2024, but with the delay presumably, they’ve now been pushed back to 2023 and 2025, or even 2026 for the latter if they stick to the three-year plan.
Our best bet would be that Warner Bros want to release two Harry Potter and the Cursed Child movies after Fantastic Beasts 5, so we’re talking the late 2020s here.
And what’s most significant about that is that Dan, Emma and Rupert will be around the age of their characters in the play then – perfect timing for them to reprise their roles
And why stop there? Maybe the early 2030s could see the movies rebooted as Warner Bros TV shows, with a season for each Harry Potter book – covering aspects of the novels that didn’t make it into the films. Whatever the case, you can bet Warner Bros have big future plans for their Wizarding World franchise.
