Hellboy reviews: 'SOULLESS REBOOT' gets ABYSMAL Rotten Tomatoes score – what is it?
This iteration of Hellboy sees the legendary half-demon superhero called to the English countryside to battle a trio of rampaging giants. There he discovers The Blood Queen, Nimue (Milla Jovovich, Resident Evil series), a resurrected ancient sorceress thirsting to avenge a past betrayal. Suddenly caught in a clash between the supernatural and the human, Hellboy is now hell-bent on stopping Nimue without triggering the end of the world.
What do critics say about Hellboy?
Critics have not been kind to the Hellboy remake, which was directed by Neil Marshall.
The Rotten Tomatoes critics’ consensus reads: “Bereft of the imaginative flair that made earlier Hellboys so enjoyable, this soulless reboot suggests Dante may have left a tenth circle out of his Inferno.”
With these harsh words, it is no wonder the film holds only a 10 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Metacritic weighs reviews differently and gives the film a still negative 35 citing one positive, 15 mixed, and 6 negative reviews.
DUMBO REVIEWS: WHAT DO CRITICS SAY ABOUT TIM BURTON’S DUMBO REMAKE?
Philip De Semlyen for Time Out:
It’s two hours long but feels like an eternity, lurching incoherently from one noisy set-piece to another.
William Bibbiani for TheWrap:
Captures the breathless quality of reading 30 issues of a single comic-book series in one sugar-addled afternoon, shoving as many amazing characters and storylines and images into one film as it can possibly hold.
Rafer Guzman for Newsday:
Violence and vulgarity replace the humour and poetry of Guillermo del Toro’s superhero films.
Katie Rife for the AV Club:
The sentimental father-son subplot is Hellboy at its most laughably absurd, highlighting the chasm between its script and its direction.
THE DIRT REVIEWS: WHAT DO CRITICS SAY ABOUT NETFLIX MÖTLEY CRÜE BIOPIC
Alan Zilberman for the Washington Post:
Marshall and screenwriter Andrew Cosby went overboard with their R-rating, introducing so much gore and profanity that it, quite frankly, gets dull.
The flat performances and incoherent story do not help matters.
Mark Kennedy for the Associated Press:
It’s really a series of violent vignettes strung together, getting more and more outlandish and introducing characters at such a blistering pace that you just want it to stop already.
Justin Chang for the Los Angeles Times:
The movie seems to spring from a curious awareness of how unnecessary it is, and it responds in the manner of an uninvited guest, with no interest in behaving or ingratiating itself.
Eric Kohn for indieWire:
As much as it attempts to inject fresh life into the franchise, it winds up feeling more like the walking dead.
Darren Franich for Entertainment Weekly:
Look, I’m glad expensive movies are R-rated again. But this is the doofiest kind of maturity: boring CGI blood sprays, F-bombs galore.
John DeFore for the Hollywood Reporter:
Neil Marshall’s Hellboy isn’t lousy because nobody wants it, nor only because it fails to live up to both its big-screen and printed predecessors. It’s just lousy.
Owen Gleiberman for Variety:
It’s lunging to be a badass hard-R epic, but it’s basically a pile of origin-story gobbledygook, frenetic and undercooked, full of limb-hacking, eye-gouging monster battles as well as an atmosphere of apocalyptic grunge that signifies next to nothing.
Hellboy is now playing in cinemas.
