Holmes and Watson streaming: Can you watch Holmes and Watson online? Is it legal?

Holmes & Watson is a slap-stick comedy starring Will Ferrell and John C Reilly as the eponymous detective and his sidekick. But the movie isn’t faring well with critics or audiences, and currently holds eight percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie debuted in UK cinemas on Boxing Day, December 26, but failed to capitalise on Christmas cheer.

The plot synopsis of Holmes & Watson reads: “Detective Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson join forces to investigate a mysterious murder at Buckingham Palace.

“It seems like an open-and-shut case as all signs point to Professor James Moriarty, the criminal mastermind and longtime nemesis of the crime-solving duo.

“When new twists and clues begin to emerge, the world’s greatest sleuth and his trusted assistant must now use their legendary wits and ingenious methods to catch the killer before the Queen becomes the next victim.”

The critics’ consensus reads: “The lowest and vilest alleys in London do not present a more dreadful record of the adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson than does Holmes and Watson.”

The comedy did not perform much better with audiences either, and the film holds a 29 per cent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Will Ferrell plays the world-famous detective Sherlock Holmes.

John C Reilly plays the titular Dr John Watson, who worked previously with Ferrell in Step Brothers.

Rebecca Hall plays Dr Grace Hart, with Ralph Fiennes as the infamous villain Professor Moriarty.

Rob Brydon plays Inspector Lestrade, the Scotland Yard detective who finds Holmes annoying.

Hugh Laurie plays Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock’s equally brilliant brother.

Other cast members include Kelly Macdonald as Rose Hudson, Lauren Lapkus as Millie, Pam Ferris as Queen Victoria, Bella Ramsey as Flotsam, Scarlet Grace as Pickle, Noah Jupe as Doxy, Steve Coogan, and Braun Strowman.

Despite the star-studded cast, however, Homes & Watson has only garnered negative reviews.

Ignatiy Vishnevetsky from AV Club wrote: “Might be the worst feature-length film ever made about the ‘consulting detective’ from Baker Street.”

David Fear of Rolling Stone gave it 0.5 out of five stars, and wrote: “It’s so painfully unfunny we’re not sure it can legally be called a comedy.”

Likewise, Joshua Rothkopf wrote for Time Out: “If a comedy falls in the forest and nobody laughs, did it even exist?”

For IndieWire, David Ehrlich wrote: “The only compelling mystery about Holmes & Watson is how so many funny people have been squeezed into such an unfunny movie, a movie that isn’t nearly smart enough to recognize how stupid it should have been.”
