Home Alone: Macaulay Culkin responds to ‘reboot’ announcement in hilarious style

Disney recently acquired the rights to the property when they took over Fox, and now it’s been revealed that it’s among a handful of classic family capers that will be “re-imagined” for their Disney+ streaming service.

Culkin was the leading man – or rather, leading child – of the 1990 hit and its sequel Lost In New York.

It followed eight-year-old Kevin McCallister after he was accidentally left behind by his stressed parents when their huge family went on a Christmas holiday.

The plot sees his mother Kate (Catherine O’Hara) racing to get back home to him, while he tries to outsmart a pair of hapless burglars who think the house is empty.

Culkin, now 38, reacted to the news online.

Sharing a photo on Twitter of himself looking tired and half-dressed with a bowl of food in his arm, he wrote: “This is what an updated Home Alone would actually look like.”

He added: “Hey @Disney, call me!”

It’s gone down a storm: the photo has had almost half a million likes and 80,000 Retweets.

The Home Alone remake news has not gone down well with fans of the original, although it’s not yet clear what form it will take – given that it will go directly to streaming, rather than appear in cinemas.

“No I’m sorry, f**k off with this now,” one person tweeted.

“I. AM. RAGING.,” tweeted a another, while an additional tweet reads: “Dear @Disney, Please just f**king don’t. Sincerely, Everybody.”

“DO NOT TOUCH HOME ALONE! LEAVE HOME ALONE WELL ALONE THANK YOU,” said another tweet.

The film made $477 million at the box office and a sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost In New York, followed in 1992 and took $359 million.

Attempts to recreate the magic have already been made several times: in 1997, Home Alone 3 was made a different cast and took just $80 million.

Two direct-to-TV sequels were made after that; Home Alone 4 in 2002 and Home Alone: The Holiday Heist in 2012.

There’s no release date for the new retelling just yet.
