Hurricane Gert aftermath could bring WARMEST DAY of the month in UK
The Met Office said August’s patchy weather will continue this weekend, with the North of Britain likely see a cloudy and rainy Saturday but a drier Sunday with some sunshine.
By contrast, the South of England will mostly see a sunny, dry Saturday and a cloudy, showery Sunday.
The remnants of Hurricane Gert could bring more “tropical and humid” conditions to southern and eastern parts as Sunday ends, said meteorologist Charlie Powell.
The hurricane is expected to be “wrapped up in existing pressure” and weakened as it moves across the Atlantic Ocean, likely bringing humidity and balminess to the South.
If the weather hits 26C (78.8F) or 27C (80.6F) on Monday, that will make it the warmest day of August.
Though potentially salvaging summer for the South, it could end up bringing wind and wet to the North, but that remains uncertain, Mr Powell added.
The weather is expected to be more settled by midweek.
However, it is unclear what to expect over the August bank holiday until the pressure clears.
Earlier this week, Jim Dale, forecaster for British Weather Services, said: “Gert is likely to get picked by the jet stream and steered towards the UK and this might be part of he equation that will eventually bring a change to our weather.
“What’s left of the hurricane will move over the north of the country helping high pressure to build across the UK.
“The Azores High and the Continental High will push up towards the country and this could bring the expected improvement in the weather for the end of the month.”
