James Bond 25 producer ‘Me Too has had HUGE impact on society, this 007 will reflect that’

Yesterday, Bond 25’s cast and synopsis were revealed in a live stream from Ian Fleming’s Goldeneye in Jamaica. Following sexual assault allegations in Hollywood in recent years and the response from the Me Too movement, some fans have wondered how this will affect James Bond. After all, the womanising spy has some pretty dated scenes in the earlier films from the 1960s and 1970s. For example, in Goldfinger Connery’s Bond forces himself on Pussy Galore until she gives in to his sexual conquest.

And in more recent Bond films like Skyfall, some fans took issue with Craig’s 007 joining Sévérine in a shower scene shortly after she opened up to him about her past as a sex slave.

But now at the Bond 25 launch producer Barbara Broccoli has confirmed that Bond’s attitude to women will change with the time.

She told the BBC: “The Me Too movement has had a huge impact – rightfully, thankfully – on society, and these films should reflect that, as everything we do should.

Craig added: “Bond has always adapted for the times.”

Speaking exclusively with Express.co.uk, Dr Kinane said: “Bond is well past his sell-by-date; I think as a character he’s a total anachronism.

“All of the attempts ostensibly made in the Daniel Craig era to ‘modernise’ this character, to ‘modernise the treatment of women and updating gender relations’, has seen very little actually done. When you look at the films, the politics of gender are just as disgraceful as they’ve always been since the 60s.

“So I see no reason why James Bond should survive Bond 25 because he is a man of the 50s and 60s. There’s a reason why the novels are so enjoyable; because they’re time capsules. They allow you to enter into this phase when ‘the good ol’ British Empire’ is still going strong.

Bond 25 is released in UK cinemas on April 3, 2020.
