Joker after credits: Is there a post credit scene after the Joker?

Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker has finally been unleashed on the world. The super villain is out to wreak havoc on the people of Gotham, though this film follows how poor comedy Arthur Fleck becomes the devilish maniac. While little about the plot has been known until now, one question is still on fans’ minds.

***WARNING: Spoilers for Joker***

Is there an end credits scene after Joker?

Often, superhero movies a la Marvel are littered with scenes during and after the credits.

DC Comics, whose films have not gained quite as much momentum as Marvell’s but are still high on comic book fans’ lists, have also followed in this trend.

Some of the films even have snippets from upcoming blockbusters in the movies, with Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice teasing Justice League and Wonder Woman within the film itself.

Joker, however, is a very different film, and is an origin story of a comic book villain – a set up which has not yet been explored in the DCEU.

Joaquin Phoenix has also said it will be standalone, meaning the likelihood of this movie leading into another DCEU film is not great.

As a result, there is no mid-credits or after-credits scene in Joker.

The reason why is fairly simple, says director Todd Phillips, who spoke to GamesRadar about the issue.

He said: “The idea of a post-credits scene in this movie would seem wrong, and a little too light for me.

“That wouldn’t have been something we did. But Joaquin [Phoenix] said it would be funny to put bloopers alongside the names like they did in the old days.”

Of course, Joker is not the first and will not be the last superhero movie to exclude a post-credit scene.

Avengers: Endgame famously chose not to include a scene during or after the credits, likely to show a clear end for The Avengers as we know them to be.

As well as this, Logan, the final Wolverine movie which gained Oscar-nominations, did not have an end credit scene, likely because of the pain and death which so heavily featured.

Joker, in contrast, is very much the beginning of something, as an origin story, so it may seem slightly strange that we do not see any continuation for the Joker.

Does this mean Phoenix’s incarnation of the villain will never again appear in the DCEU?

Phoenix has said the idea of doing a standalone movie of this type is what attracted him to it, as he was originally approached by Marvel to portray one of their heroes, such as Dr Strange.

Being in a Marvel film, of course, required signing on to far more than just one film, usually, so it makes sense that this option would not interest Phoenix.

As fans flock to the cinema for Joker, they will have to decide whether Phoenix made the right choice in waiting for this role.
