Julie Andrews will always have a special place in the hearts of Mary Poppins fans, having played the beloved character in the original film back in 1964. Ahead of her interview on The Graham Norton Show tonight, the actress shared her thoughts on the long-awaited sequel, which came out last year. “I loved it. Yeah,” she said on Watch What Happens Live. “Look, the first film was made over 50 years ago, 60 years ago.

“I think it’s about time a second one was allowed,” the Mary Poppins star continued. “But also, this had nothing to do with the first one.

“It wasn’t as if they were repeating the first story. They had umpteen P. L. Travers books of Mary Poppins in the vault,” she noted. “So, they had to make a new one.”

As Andrews pointed out, Mary Poppins author P. L. Travers penned an impressive eight children’s book centred around the characters adventures.

But the actress didn’t stop there, going on to back the production of more Mary Poppins films in the future.

The tease came as fellow guest Whoopi Goldberg admitted she struggled to assimilate Emily Blunt’s new Mary Poppins with the one she knew and loved.

“It took me a minute,” the Sister Act star said, haltingly. “Because, for me, Julie’s always going to be Mary Poppins.”

“But she [Blunt] was wonderful, wasn’t she?” Andrews chipped in.

Goldberg agreed, before saying children would benefit from the sequel because they could appreciate both movies and, “in another 30 years there will be another one”.

Among the rest of the cast were Ben Wishaw and Emily Mortimer as a grown up Michael and Jane Banks, Julie Walters, Meryl Streep and Colin Firth.

Elsewhere, Andrews, who will be joining the line-up on tonight’s Graham Norton Show to discuss her second instalment of her memoirs, recently spilled secrets about Mary Poppins during an interview on Good Morning America.

Hinting that the prim and proper nanny wasn’t quite as she seemed in the 1964 film, she spoke about her then-husband Tony Walton’s costume designs, including statement undergarments.

“He was — well, is — incredibly talented,” she explained. “And he said, ‘I fancy that Mary Poppins has a secret life.’
