Little Monsters, the latest horror comedy to hit cinemas, stars Lupita Nyong’o as Miss Caroline, a teacher taking her students for a fun day out along with chaperone and washed-up musician Dave (played by Alexander England.) Josh Gad plays the seemingly jolly children’s entertainer, who quickly turns into someone very different when faced with a zombie apocalypse which threatens his life along with those of the children. But how old do you have to be to see Little Monsters?

But how old do you have to be to see Little Monsters?

According to the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) there are various issues which may cause viewers to become slightly upset.

Little Monsters has been given a 15 certificate by the BBFC, meaning those who are younger than 15 are not permitted to watch the film.

The BBFC has also released guidelines about what kinds of things may upset viewers, including gore, comedy violence and occasional crude sexual references.

The guidelines read: “There is infrequent use of very strong language (c**t), as well as frequent use of strong language (f**k, ‘motherf****r’).

“Milder terms include p***k, d**k, c**k, p***y and b***h.”

The BBFC says the work as a whole does not condone discrimination, despite there being some discriminatory words used as well.

The guidelines continue: “[There are] Scenes of strong comic violence include gory zombie attacks and scenes in which zombies are shot or decapitated.

“There is a close-up image of a burst of blood and bodily tissue when a zombie is shot in the head.

“A zombie pulls out a man’s intestines and then tears away his cheek, exposing his bloody teeth and jawbone.

“Further gory images include sight of bloodied corpses – both human and animal – and of zombies eating internal organs and severed limbs.

“There are occasional crude verbal sex references. Another sequence features brief breast nudity, when a child interrupts a couple having sex.

“There are also two scenes of masturbation, without strong visual detail.

“People, including young children, are menaced by herds of zombies, resulting in sustained comic threat.

“Several people are attacked and killed, but no children die on screen.

“There is brief sight of a man using a bong.”

Despite these guidelines, the film is called a horror-comedy, meaning much of the gore/violence seems likely to be done with a comic tone, which could lessen the effect of anything upsetting.

However, as always, it is best for parents to perhaps watch the film first, or practise caution when allowing their teenagers to see the movie.

Little Monsters is out in cinemas on November 15
