Long Shot reviews: 'SHARP, deceptively layered' Seth Rogen, Charlize Theron comedy WORKS
Long Shot flips the tables on a common romantic comedy trope. Instead of the rich and powerful man and a rough-around-the-edges woman (à la Pretty Woman), Long Shot swaps those gender roles around. Though the trailer was relatively well received, the movie has proved triumphant.
Here’s what critics have to say about Long Shot.
The movie currently holds an 86 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The critics’ consensus reads: “A sharp and deceptively layered comedy that’s further fueled by the odd couple chemistry of its leads, this Long Shot largely hits its marks.”
David Jenkins for Little White Lies:
The more you think about it, the more confused and hollow it seems.
Kristy Puchko for the Guardian:
Long Shot is a hilarious and heartwarming romantic comedy that will have audiences howling in shock and awwww.
BEYONCÉ NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS: WHAT DO CRITICS SAY ABOUT HOMECOMING

Long Shot turns its endearing couple into a savvy vessel for exploring America’s fractured times.
Yolanda Machado for TheWrap:
Rogen’s off-kilter charm and jocularity pair well with Theron’s elegance and wit.
Brian Tallerico for RogerEbert.com:
A rom-com with a political edge that will be one of this year’s most beloved crowdpleasers.
John DeFore for the Hollywood Reporter:
Very funny whatever you think of its more old-fashioned notions, the picture will charm many viewers who can set implausibility aside for a while; it’s certainly the most commercial film yet by The Wackness director Levine.
THE SILENCE REVIEWS: CRITICS CALL NETFLIX HORROR MOVIE ‘CLUMSY’
Peter Debruge for Variety:
Bound to embarrass everyone a year or so down the road, once the think pieces have picked it apart.
Ian Freer for Empire:
Finding laughs in the current global political quagmire is a tough ask. But Long Shot manages to spin a winning mixture of warm-hearted fantasy and comedic edge. And Rogen and Theron shine.
Anna Smith for The List:
Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen may not be an obvious pairing, but Jonathan Levine’s romantic comedy makes a virtue of that.
Robert Kojder for Flickering Myth:
Long Shot finds real things to say about relationships and love amid all of its ludicrous set-pieces.
HELLBOY REVIEWS: ‘SOULLESS REBOOT’ GETS ABYSMAL ROTTEN TOMATOES SCORE
Pat Brown for Slant Magazine:
As it proceeds toward its telegraphed rom-com ending, the film becomes just more empty rhetoric, an ineffectual reiteration.
Kevin L. Lee for Film Inquiry:
If there’s only one reason to see Long Shot, it is to see Theron let everything loose and defy all expectations of what you think she’s capable of.
David Griffin for IGN Movies:
Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen transform Long Shot’s familiar rom-com story into a memorable and funny movie.
Angie Han for Mashable:
What pushes Long Shot from unexpected to downright unbelievable, however, is the context in which this coupling takes place.
Long Shot is out in UK cinemas on May 3, 2019.
