49: There’s drama in the 49th minute. Jordan Pickford appears to collect a backpass from Leighton Baines, but the replays show it deflected off Sterling’s boot en-route.

48: Give me strength. Manchester City have just committed their second foul throw of the match. City seeing far more possession in the early stages – even with a man less!

45: We’re back underway folks. Pep Guardiola has made a change with Raheem Sterling replacing Gabriel Jesus. I think Pep’s logic is that if a former Manchester United players scores against City, then a former Liverpool players will do the same…

Rooney’s got his 200th Premier League goal – and silenced the City boo boys.

But the big talking point was Walker’s controversial dismissal. 

He had just been booked for a late challenge on Baines when he barged into Calvert-Lewin. It looked no more than a free-kick for obstruction but referee Madley thought it was worthy of a yellow and Walker’s home debut has ended with an early bath and his team trying to retrieve a 1-0 deficit with only 10 men.

Everton have been City’s bogey team for several years and they will enhance that status if they can hold onto their lead. Jose Mourinho is in the crowd along and will be hoping they can do so. Gareth Southgate is here too and will have been impressed by Rooney’s second goal in as many Premier League games and Phil Jagielka’s defensive performance.

HT: Gary Neville: “I think the referee must think he has elbowed Calvert-Lewin. The reality is he hasn’t. Walker has a little look, which might count against him. Calvert-Lewin has gone down and been clever. He’s held his head and it has conned the referee.”

44: MANCHESTER CITY 0-1 EVERTON – RED CARD

Not a great home debut for Kyle Walker. The mega-money signing is off for a second bookable offence in as many minutes.

I think Robert Madley’s got it wrong. The right-back leans into Calvert-Lewin from a goalkick, and Holgate hits the deck like he’s been shot.

42: Kyle Walker goes in the book for a reckless challenge on Schneiderlin.

39: How have Manchester City responded? Not brilliantly. Leroy Sane is clearly growing frustrated and almost earns himself a booking for a late challenge on Mason Holgate.

35: MANCHESTER CITY 0-1 EVERTON – ROONEY

Just 50 seconds after David Silva stuck the post, Everton have taken the lead courtesy of Wayne Rooney!

Leroy Sane’s error lets in Calvert-Lewin, who skips past Fernandinho and crosses for Rooney to tuck in his 200th Premier League goal. Questons WILL be asked about the goalkeeping there. Ederson should do better.

The former Manchester United captain cupped his ear at the City fans, who were a tad upset…

35: Woodwork! City are really turning the screw now. Silva hits the post after a cracking ball from Aguero.

34: Wow. Who knew Phil Jagielka still had that in his locker. KDB slips Sergio Aguero through, but the Everton centre-back slides for what seems like an eternity to block the shot.

Fireworks greeted the teams and it’s been pretty lively from the kick-off with City adopting a shoot-on sight policy while Everton have been getting stuck in.

Pickford spared Rooney’s blushes with a smart reaction save after the former United man diverted De Bruyne’s free-kick goal wards. 

Schneiderlin’s been booked for a late challenge on Aguero.

Otamendi, clearly stung by City’s interest in Jonny Evans, is having a fine game – and has even tested Pickford with a couple of firmly hit shots. Can’t take your eyes of this one.

32: Everton are playing everything down the right-hand side to expose Leroy Sane and avoid Kyle Walker. The visitors are a Seamus Coleman away from being able to capitalise. Wayne Rooney takes a free-kick a few yards from the touchline, but he’s thumped it straight out.

29: Close! Otamendi lashes one at Jordan Pickford, who parries it to Sergio Aguero. The Argentine goes for a looping header but Michael Keane is there to clear off the line.

26: I can’t tell you how aggravating it is to hear Sky’s commentator pronounce Jagielka as “yag-yell-ka.” Anyway, Tom Davies earns himself a booking for a senseless dive. Silly.

23: A familiar pattern is emerging folks. Everton are playing keep-ball for as long as possible when they win it back, while City are piling forward. Koeman clearly hoping for a classic ‘Smash n Grab.’

20: This City team rarely panic. They’re in no rush to break the deadlock and are still playing it patiently in the midfield areas. Fairly subdued atmosphere here though. Could do with it being taken up a few notches.

17: Wayne Rooney and Tom Davies have been pretty anonymous so far. The Toffees need an outlet to give their defenders some respite. Jordan Pickford finds DCL with a terrific ball forward. He squares to Davies, who drags it wide.

14: KDB’s corner falls nicely to Gabriel Jesus, who blazes his effort miles over the bar. Incidentally, Jose Mourinho is in the house! His disguise could do with a bit of work though. Just a baseball cap… I’d have paid good money to see him in a stick-on moustache.

11: Looks like Everton are going to be heavily reliant on young Calvert-Lewin running the channels tonight. Not much pace in Ronald Koeman’s side.

9: Morgan Schneiderlin gets his tackle horribly wrong and chops Sergio Aguero down. I guess we’ll put that down to a former Manchester rivalry… He’s booked.

7: Gueye bundles his way through Silva. Kevin De Bruyne steps up… saved! His strike deflected off everyone before Pickford dropped on it.

5: Mason Holgate plays it over the top for Calvert-Lewin, and the striker’s first-time shot rolls wide of the post.

3: Why the hell are we playing?! Nobody can see a thing! I would show you some pictures but you’d just be starring at a grey screen! Otamendi looks to catch Pickford unaware but his 25-yard strike is comfortably dealt with.

1: MANCHESTER CITY 0-0 EVERTON

We’re underway folks. The fog is still very thick though. Who’s getting sacked for that bright idea?!

19:58: Manchester City have treated supporters to a fireworks display as the players emerge from the tunnel. Not quite sure how they intend to get things underway. The fog is ridiculous!

Rooney needs just one goal to become only the second player to score 200 Premier League goals – Alan Shearer, who else, was the first. He bagged 260.

And Sergio Aguero needs one to become the highest scoring non-European player in the Premier League. The Argentinian has 123 – the same number as Dwight Yorke.

City open their new “Tunnel Club” hospitality suite tonight where fans pay for the privilege of watching the players, managers and officials walk in and out of the pitch area. They’ll get a close up view of any bust-ups so perhaps they’ll let the media know?!

19:45: All excited to watch the draw for the third round of the Carabao Cup? Well, unless you’re a Nightcrawler, you’ll probably miss it.

The draw will take place in Beijing on Thursday, and is scheduled to be made at approximately 11:15am local time but the time difference with China means that is 4:15am UK time.

It is the latest controversy to hit the rebranded competition this season after Charlton were shown to be playing two teams in a graphic displaying the first round draw and John Salako got confused about which teams were playing at home or away in the previous round’s draw.

19:40: Ronald Koeman might have revealed his tactics, but fortunately for him, Pep Guardiola doesn’t seem to care.

The Spaniard has absolutely intention of changing his tactics, and insists he’ll focus only on his own gameplan.

The former Barcelona coach said: “It’s not a secret. I have been a manager for years and I don’t have to announce to all the managers in the world about the space in behind. They know that.

“Even in the final of the Champions League there was a lot of space. I am not going to change.”

19:35: Ronald Koeman rates Manchester City as a better team than last season – but still believes they have a weakness that Everton can exploit.

The Toffees achieved one of the most notable results of last term when they defeated City 4-0 at Goodison Park having held Pep Guardiola’s side to a 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium earlier in the campaign.

And the Dutchman thinks he can do it again!

He said: “There is always space behind, we know that, we remember that. When we played City at home we punished them for that.”

19:30: Obviously tonight’s match sees the return of Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher together on Sky Sports.

They’re like like peas and carrots, meat and potatoes, rice and beans, sweet and… sour. I’ll let you be the judge of which is which.

Anyway, they’ve been on-air for around 30 minutes and neither has insulted anyone or started an argument.

I’m pretty sure thats a record for them.

It’s Rooney’s first trip back to Manchester since his departure from United. And he’ll hope it goes better than his last appearance of his first spell in an Everton shirt – a 5-1 defeat at the Etihad Stadium on the final day of the 2003-04 season.

As expected record signing Gylfi Sigurdsson is only the bench for Everton. City make one change with Leroy Sane coming in for Danilo.

Ronald Koeman frustrated his old Barcelona pal Pep Guardiola last season. Everton got  a 1-1 draw at the Etihad after being battered for most of the game. And in the return at Goodison, City produced a defensive horror show and lost 4-0 – the heaviest defeat of Guardiola’s managerial career.

19:20: There’s another debutant tonight folks, can you guess what it is? Wow, you guessed first time.

Yes, It’s Everton’s third strip, which is a snazzy (can’t believe I used that word) purple and neon yellow kit with stripes.

Tonight’s version will feature Manchester City’s iconic worker bee emblem in a show of solidarity and support following the Manchester terrorist attack in May and last week’s tragedy in Barcelona.

19:15: Blimey, has this actually just landed on my desk?!

Wayne and Coleen Rooney are 4/7 with Betway to continue the family tradition and give their fourth baby a name beginning with “K”.

Following Kai, Klay and Kit, the odds suggest the Rooneys will opt for another “K” name, with Kimberly the bookie’s favourite at 9/2.

Although if you fancy a punt, you can have Kante at 1000/1 or perhaps Klopp at 2500/1…

19:10: Everton’s record signing Gylfi Sigurdsson will have to make his debut from the bench as Ronald Koeman elects for a 3-5-2.

The Dutchman has made two changes to the side that beat Stoke on the opening day of the season with Sandro Ramirez (injured) and Davy Klaassen (bench) are replaced by Tom Davies and Mason Holgate.

19:05: Pep Guardiola has made one change to the side that cruised past Brighton with Leroy Sane replacing Danilo. I’m hear that was a very late change indeed.

There’s no Ilkay Gundogan or Benjamin Mendy despite a return to full training, while John Stones lines up against his former employers.

Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus start together with David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and And Fernandinho in support.

Plenty of width from those full-backs too. Kyle Walker and Sane are no slouches.

18:40: There’s been an eclipse at Everton. Yep, they’ve eclipsed their transfer record with the signing of Gylfi Sigurdsson.

I’ll see myself out.

Sigurdsson this week became the most expensive signing in the Toffees’ history, with the Iceland playmaker joining from Swansea in a deal believed to be worth up to £45million.

He is set to make his debut in tonight’s clash, but it’ll probably be from off the bench.

18:35: Another rare phenomenon would be seeing Pep Guardiola field an unchanged XI. The Spanish tactician made over 100 changes in 38 games last season.

We’ll find out at 7pm whether he’s stuck with the same team that beat Brighton 2-0 last Saturday. I’m not holding my breath.

MANCHESTER CITY TEAM NEWS

Manchester City are still without new signing Benjamin Mendy and midfielder Ilkay Gundogan for tonight’s Premier League visit of Everton.

Left-back Mendy (thigh) and Gundogan (knee) are both back in training and close to fitness but the next game comes too soon.

City have no fresh injury concerns but midfielder Fabian Delph is also out with an unspecified knock.

EVERTON TEAM NEWS

Everton’s record signing Gylfi Sigurdsson is expected to make his debut tonight.

The Icelander’s move from Swansea was completed on Wednesday and, although he only feels ready to play 45 minutes, boss Ronald Koeman said he would be involved.

Ross Barkley, who has reportedly suffered a hamstring injury, and James McCarthy (knee) have not been involved so far this season but Sandro Ramirez could return after missing Thursday’s win over Hajduk Split with a heel problem.
