Mary Poppins Returns: Director drops shock bombshell about Emily Blunt’s iconic nanny

Emily Blunt took over from Julie Andrews in the new film, which has been a huge box office success and even garnered multiple Golden Globes nominations. With Rob Marshall at the helm, it introduced a new generation to PL Travers’ iconic character; complete with a new batch of songs – and even a cameo from Dick Van Dyke. And it seems we may not have to wait another 54 years for more.

Yes, Marshall has hinted that a sequel is already in the works.

And what’s more, a producer has implied that Blunt could be very keen to reprise her role.

“It is early stages but I will say right now that there were eight books, so there’s a lot of great material still to mine,” Marshall told The Sun.

“That’s what we worked from, those incredible eight books of P.L. Travers. So, you know…

“If there’s a great character and story to tell, why not?”

John DeLuca added: “Emily does light up when she speaks to me about it. And if the people want it, I think it will happen.”

Julie Andrews did not star in the film, reportedly because she did not want to pull focus from Blunt (although reports suggested one part in particular was written for her). But could she be tempted back if another is made? It seems we’ll have to wait and see.

Meanwhile, Blunt has been speaking highly of the young child stars in the film – in particularly the youngest, Joel Dawson, who played Georgie Banks.

“He was sort of crazy and had never done a film before; it was all so new to film and he didn’t know how to focus,” she told Jimmy Kimmel.

“And it was like, ‘OK, we’re rolling, Joel, we’re rolling, Joel… Joel, please…'”

She added of one particular moment: “I had this mammoth monologue, I remember, really fast paced. I was just trying to focus for a second.

“And they were like, ‘OK, rolling, rolling’, and Joel would be like, ‘Emily, what do you get if you put the letter B in front of the word ‘oobs’? And I was like [nervous face].”

As the studio audience laughed, she quipped: “They were like, ‘and action’ and I was like, ‘shh, shut up’.
