Mary Poppins Returns: Emily Blunt reveals jaw-dropping secret behind THIS magical scene

The Disney sequel is picking up lots of love from viewers after releasing shortly before Christmas. With warm reviews and Golden Globes nominations under its umbrella, it’s a certified smash for Disney – but just how did all the more enchanting scenes get made? Emily Blunt, who plays the titular nanny, has spoken out about the underwater sequence.

It’s clear that the actors weren’t actually submerged in water when they shot the musical number.

So how did they achieve that drifty, floating effect? Well, Blunt has revealed that the song was actually shot at double-speed.

This meant that, when it was slowed back down in the editing room, the music was at the normal speed, and the lip-syncing was in time – but the bodily actions had a slow-motion effect.

Speaking to Collider, she said: “It’s all green screen, we’re on wires hung horizontal, and you have to pretend to be swimming, so a lot of these sort of arm movements.

“And what they do is they play the music at double speed so you have to sing at double speed – which is a bit embarrassing because you sound like Alvin and the Chipmunks.

“But then what they do is when they put it all together, they can slow you down or something, so that it looks like your body is floating but your lips are moving at the right time with the music.

“Does that make sense? I’m very untechnical. It’s just madness. I just did what I was told.”

Speaking on Jimmy Kimmel’s chatshow, Blunt had also revealed a hilarious on-set moment with little Joel Dawson, who plays Georgie Banks.

“I had this mammoth monologue, I remember, really fast paced. I was just trying to focus for a second,” she recalled.

“And they were like, ‘OK, rolling, rolling’, and Joel would be like, ‘Emily, what do you get if you put the letter B in front of the word ‘oobs’?

“And I was like [nervous face].”

As the studio audience laughed, she quipped: “They were like, ‘and action’ and I was like, ‘shh, shut up’.

“And it graduated to ‘agina’ and the letter V. He’s so dirty, that one!”
