Mary Queen of Scots DVD release date: When is historical drama out on DVD and Blu-ray?

The historical drama follows the relationship between two rival monarchs. Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird) and Margot Robbie (I, Tonya) star as Mary I of Scotland and Elizabeth I of England respectively. Critics overall were pleased by the movie, and it currently holds a 62 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Rotten Tomatoes critics’ consensus reads: “Mary Queen of Scots delivers uneven period political thrills while offering a solid showcase for the talents of its well-matched leads.”

Joining the two starlets in the cast are Jack Lowden, Joe Alwyn, David Tennant, and Guy Pearce.

Mary Queen of Scots explores the turbulent life of the charismatic Mary Stuart.

The official synopsis continues: “Queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18, Mary defies pressure to remarry.

“Instead, she returns to her native Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne. But Scotland and England fall under the rule of the compelling Elizabeth I.

“Each young Queen beholds her “sister” in fear and fascination.

“Rivals in power and in love, and female regents in a masculine world, the two must decide how to play the game of marriage versus independence.

“Determined to rule as much more than a figurehead, Mary asserts her claim to the English throne, threatening Elizabeth’s sovereignty.

“Betrayal, rebellion, and conspiracies within each court imperil both thrones – and change the course of history.”

Mary Queen of Scots was originally set to star Scarlett Johansson with a filming start date of summer of 2007.

However, Johansson withdrew from the film and it was stuck in developmental purgatory.

Five years later in August 2012, Saoirse Ronan was announced as the titular queen, Mary Stuart.

Another five years later, in April 2017 Margot Robbie was announced as her co-star, playing Queen Elizabeth I.

Now in March 2019, the movie is finally available for home entertainment.
