Matrix 4 cast: Will Keanu Reeves play Neo in the Matrix reboot?

Keanu Reeves and Carrie Anne Moss have already confirmed they will be returning to The Matrix for the fourth film in the franchise. Co-creator Lana Wachowski will also return to write, direct and produce the film. But will Neo and Trinity be as they were?

It has been confirmed that yes, Neo will return in the fourth film in the franchise.

Of course, fans will remember Neo sacrificed himself to save Zion, and Trinity died to save Neo, in The Matrix Revolutions.

As both Neo and Trinity are dead in The Matrix, the details around the plot seem pretty confusing – how could the pair return?

One theory is that the fourth film will be a prequel to the original Matrix films, meaning Carrie Anne Moss and Keanu Reeves will play younger versions of Trinity and Neo.

This rumour has gained further traction when it was revealed in Variety that the production team behind the new film are potentially looking to recast Morpheus.

Laurence Fishburne’s character “may be recast for a younger take,” it was reported, meaning a young Morpheus certainly suggested a young Trinity and Neo as well.

However, as Morpheus and Niobe were the only Nebuchadnezzar crew members who survived to see the new Zion, it makes sense that to see Trinity and Neo return would mean we are seeing them in an earlier point in the timeline.

Otherwise, the only other option is time travel, which certainly does not seem out of the realms of possibility for The Matrix.

The Oracle did say they would see Neo again, so perhaps they have been rebooted and will return despite their apparent deaths?

What else do we know about The Matrix 4?

Other than Lana, Carrie-Anne and Keanu, nothing else is known about who will join the cast, or even what the new film will be about.

Execs have said production is expected to start at the beginning of 2020, meaning the script will likely be finished before the year is out.

Until the plot details are finalised, little will likely be revealed except for occasional cast updates.

At the moment Jada Pinkett Smith, Laurence Fishburne, Hugo Weaving and Joe Pantoliano are not confirmed to be rejoining the cast.

The Matrix 4 will likely be released in 2021 at the earliest
