Meghan Markle: Thrifty Duchess wears £25 red tassel earrings on South Africa royal tour
Meghan Markle, the wife of Prince Harry, 35, stunned the world with her fashion choices during the royal tour of South Africa. Her fashion choices, although unorthodox, highlighted the importance of sustainability without having to say a word. The royal’s choice of recycling outfits and wearing ‘affordable’ brands sparked praise online from several royal critics and media outlets. The message the Duchess was trying to unveil was clear; “Don’t focus on what I am wearing, but what I am doing,” speculated Elizabeth Holmes, a well-known journalist for her popular #SoManyThoughts series on Instagram.
Meghan still managed to appear effortlessly chic and elegant in everything she wore.
Equally, the royal’s accessory and shoe collection did not disappoint.
Opting for sustainable and ethical brands, the Duchess added several new pieces to her ever-growing collection.
One accessory that Meghan donned was a pair of gold, red-stone tassel earrings from American denim brand, Madewell.
Currently, the earrings are available to purchase from global retailer Shopbop, which reportedly retail online for only £25.95.
Meghan first wore the earrings on the final day of the royal tour in Johannesburg, South Africa.
On the day, the Duke and Duchess visited a township near Johannesburg where they met with young people and entrepreneurs who were working to tackle the rising unemployment challenge in South Africa.
Meghan opted for a crisp white button-down shirt dress, which was cinched in the middle by a belt made of the same white material.
Finishing off the look, the duchess wore her favourite comfy tan suede pointed court heels. On her wrist she wore a ‘Justice’ beaded bracelet that she and husband Harry had received on their first day of the royal tour. The bracelet paid tribute to the human rights organisation Justice Desk, a charity supported by the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust of which Harry is president and Meghan vice-president.
The earrings, dubbed “Fun and Fringey” by Madewell, are thought to be a limited-edition design, created from leftover fabric in an effort to minimise fabric waste. The earrings added a pop of colour to her minimalist outfit. The ‘Stone and Tassel Earrings’ cost just £25.95 and can currently be found in a midnight blue colour on retail site Shopbop. Described online by the retailer as: “Fun and fringey, these Madewell earrings are the piece to pick when your day-to-night loos are in need of a colour injection.”
In recent months, the Duchess has unveiled a thrifty side to her as she was also spotted wearing another affordable piece of jewellery at Misha Nonoo’s wedding back in September.
Meghan accessorised her £9,000 Valentino evening gown with a pair of gold feather-like statement earrings.
Royal fans assumed that the pair of earrings were uber-expensive; however, according to MailOnline, the pair of earrings were picked up at a vintage stall by a friend of Meghan’s four years ago. They are said to have cost just £5 from London’s Portobello Market.
According to the publication, a source said: “The Duchess has long admired the earrings and wanted to borrow them, then she found the perfect dress to wear them with!”
