Mike Tyson explains why Floyd Mayweather can become a great trainer
Former undisputed heavyweight champion Mike Tyson reckons Floyd Mayweather has what it takes to become a world-class boxing coach. Earlier this month, the former four-weight world champion announced his intention to impart his years of wisdom on to and up-and-coming fighters.
Mayweather’s intention to become a coach raised plenty of eyebrows, with many wondering if the 43-year-old’s party lifestyle would impact his ability to train fighters.
Tyson doesn’t believe the Olympian’s love for the party scene will have a detrimental effect on his ability to coach, pointing out to TMZ he lived the same lifestyle during his heyday and was undefeated when he called time on his career.
He said: “Mostly, the guy that’s the great trainer is not the great fighter and that’s why he becomes the great trainer. I give Floyd a good chance because Floyd’s a gym rat, that’s all he does.
“You see him in the club for one week but he’s in the gym every day for 25 years. Even when he goes out and party, he’s back in the gym the next day. He does it in his sleep, this is what he does.”

Mayweather, who retired from boxing for a third time in August 2017, is seemingly under no illusion his success in the ring will directly translate to him being a good coach.
“A fighter could be impressive at mitt work but it doesn’t make him a great fighter,” he said. “A trainer could be impressive on the mitts but it doesn’t make him a great trainer.
“It has become a goal of mine to help others reach the best versions of themselves and walk with it in confidence.
“I want to leave an impression on those around me and allow them to see their potential.
“This quarantine period has allowed me to see the importance of unity and helping others grow.
“I want to do my part on this earth and allow people to see the potential in themselves so that they can share it with the world.
“I am new at training and so far I’ve been working with people with no boxing experience, therefore we are growing together.
“But I promise you, I will be one of the best trainers in the world. Inspire and be inspired.”
