Morbius theory: Tobey Maguire Easter Egg sets up live-action Spider-Man MULTIVERSE movie
Spider-Man may still be in Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Sony, who own the rights to the Web-Slinger, are building their very own franchise called Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters (SUMC). Even more confusingly it’s sort of connected to Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in the MCU. We’ve already had Tom Hardy’s Venom and this summer Jared Leto’s Morbius hits cinemas, with yesterday’s first trailer teasing some more confusing connections.
The biggest shock of the Morbius trailer was seeing the return of Michael Keaton’s Vulture, the villain from MCU movie Spider-Man Homecoming.
With his inclusion surely this means that Morbius – and presumably Venom – are somehow in the MCU too?
Of course, it could be a looser connection like Netflix’s Defenders shows which referenced the MCU without properly being a part of it.
However, we reckon another Easter Egg could reveal Sony’s plan and explanation of how all these movies truly connect.

Near the end of the trailer, Morbius walks past graffiti of Spider-Man, with the word “murderer” written across it.
This references the end-credits scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home when a fake video constructed by Quentin Beck saw Peter Parker seemingly kill Mysterio.
So this is another piece of evidence that Morbius is in the MCU, but maybe it’s not quite as simple as that.
Just look at the picture of Spider-Man. It’s not Tom Holland, it’s Tobey Maguire’s incarnation.

Fans spotted that the suit from Sam Raimi’s trilogy was an image taken from the PS4 Spider-Man game. So what could this mean?
Well, our theory is that Morbius is set not in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but in a different reality across the multiverse, namely the SUMC.
And in this universe it’s Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker who is Spider-Man, meaning that’s an alternate version of Vulture we saw.
Since the Oscar-winning success of Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, we wouldn’t put it past Sony to be planning a live-action multiverse movie which sees Holland, Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker team-up.

Certainly, the MCU going forwards is going to be focusing on the Marvel multiverse, something teased by boss Kevin Feige.
After all, next year sees the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
While it’s suspected that Disney Plus shows WandaVision and Loki, as well as movie Thor: Love and Thunder, could be set across different realities too.
And let’s not forget that Spider-Man: Far From Home saw Mysterio claim he was from a different universe.
Of course, this turned out to be a lie, but we know from Doctor Strange and the use of the Quantum Realm in the Ant-Man movies and Avengers Endgame, that the Marvel multiverse is very much a thing.
Plus, if Morbius and somehow Venom (even though he was in Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 in a different incarnation) are from a different universe, this would be the perfect way of dealing with the awkward and potential inconsistencies between the two franchise’s narratives.
Just imagine a multiverse movie where the three versions of Spider-Man take on a Sinister Six that includes Venom, Morbius and Vulture.
Fingers-crossed Sony can pull this off.
