Movie release dates 2020: Which movies are out in cinemas this week? BIG award contenders
Every week, fans are bombarded with a whole host of new movies, big and small, to enjoy on the big screen. Friday is the usual day for movie releases, and there is often something for everyone in terms of genre. But which films are out in cinemas this week, and are any of them awards contenders?
Here is our pick of the best movies coming out this week, and all of the films listed come out on January 17:
Bombshell
This film saw Charlize Theron nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance, and is likely to see her earning other awards nominations on the way.
The movie, also starring Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie, takes a look at the Hollywood sex scandal from the perspective of three women working for a TV broadcaster.
The women involved are all based on real characters and real events, so this political thriller is definitely not one to miss for those who love a taste of the real world in cinema.

Just Mercy
Just Mercy is another movie which has been teasing us with potential awards, though at present it is yet to take any home.
Starring Black Panthers’ Michael B Jordan and Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx, the film is another based on a true story.
Jordan plays real-life lawyer Bryan Stevenson, who takes on the case of death row inmate Walter McMillian, an African-American man wrongfully imprisoned for the murder of a white woman in Alabama.

Bad Boys for Life
The Bad Boys are back with a third instalment of the popular franchise which grew throughout the 1990s and early 2000s.
The buddy cop movie, starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence as Detective Mike Lowrey and Inspector Marcus Burnett, will bring the cops back together after they have drifted apart.
Also starring Vanessa Hudgens, Charles Melton and DJ Khaled, the film is excepted to be another rip-roaring comedy full of action.
Weathering With You
This film is a Japanese animated romantic fantasy film, made by CoMix Wave films and directed by Makoto Shinkai, who made Your Name, which was also acclaimed.
The film has gained a huge number of awards from Asian and anime awards ceremonies, and was already lauded given it had thousands of people auditioning for the main cast roles.
The film follows a high school teenager who runs away to Tokyo during the rainy season, and befriends and orphan girl who appears to be able to manipulate the weather.
