The Prime Minister outlined the UK’s “road map” for exiting the coronavirus lockdown and urged Britons to “stay alert” on Sunday evening, which prompted a backlash from leading figures including Labour Leader Sir Keir Starmer who insisted the plan “raises as many questions as it answers”. In a television broadcast Mr Johnson outlined a range of measures and said people who cannot work from home should be “actively encouraged” to return to their jobs.

The Prime Minister also set out plans for a phased re-opening of schools from June 1, and said Britons can now meet with one person other than someone in their own household but this must be done outdoors, while maintaining social distancing.

An Express.co.uk poll of more than 4,000 readers has found the majority said they were clear on the Prime Minister’s next steps, however a large percentage admitted to being confused.

The survey conducted on Monday May 11 between 9.28am and 7.00pm asked 4,795 Express.co.uk readers “Are you confused by Boris Johnson’s new coronavirus rules?

The results revealed 33 percent (1,554) of people were left confused by the message and voted “Yes”.

The majority of readers, 66 percent (3,206) of participants thought the message was clear and voted “No”.

Meanwhile just one percent (35) of people voted “Don’t know”.

The poll has prompted a mixed response from Express.co.uk reader’s who let their feelings known in the comments section.

One user said: “There is nothing confusing about it! It is perfectly straight forward.”

A second user said: “No I’m not confused, I understood Boris perfectly.”

A third user said: “Boris told us nothing.”

A fourth user said: “Go back to work but don’t use public transport even if you can’t get there without using public transport and even if you can’t social distance at work, and even if your employer can’t guarantee your safety at work. That’s what Boris said.”

People can meet with a person from another household outdoors as long as social distancing is maintained. It can be one person one day and a different person the next.

Driving to destinations for outdoor walks and exercise is also permitted.

In a statement to the House of Commons Mr Johnson acknowledged the huge challenge of ending the lockdown and insisted decisions will be driven by public health and science.

The Prime Minister said: “Our challenge now is to find a way forward that preserves our hard-won gains while easing with the burden of lockdown. And I will be candid with the House, this is a supremely difficult balance to strike.

“There could be no greater mistake than to jeopardise everything we’ve striven to achieve by proceeding too far and too fast.

“We will be driven not by hope or economic revival as an end in itself, but by data and science and public health.”

The Department for Health has confirmed a further 210 people in hospitals, care homes and the wider community have died after testing positive for coronavirus, taking the total number of COVID-19 fatalities past 32,000.

As of 5pm on Sunday a total of 32,065 people have now died in the UK from coronavirus.
