Nicole Kidman FINALLY joins DC Extended Universe: Guess who she is playing?
The Oscar-winning star has been linked to superhero roles before, most notably to play Wonder Woman’s mother, Hippolyta, mythical ruler of the Amazons.
Connie Nielson rode off with that one, but now Kidman is set to play another fierce and deadly queen.
The Hollywood Reporter has just revealed that the Aussie actress is about to make a splash as Atlanna, the dangerous mum of Aquaman.
Their dramatic history means that Kidman definitely won’t be playing the part of Mother of the Year in the upcoming DC blockbuster.
Atlanna and Aquaman share a turbulent relationship.
Traditionally, Atlanna is shown going off to the surface where she falls in love with a mortal light-house keeper and becomes pregnant with her superhero son.
One comic book storyline, however, sees Aquaman casting aspersions on his mother’s love life, claiming that his father could have been one of any number of people.
The Hollywood Reports revealed that Kidman has always been Aquaman director James Wan’s first choice for the dramtic role.
It said: “The actress, who is in the Oscar mix this awards season for her work in Lion, is in early talks to play Aquaman’s mother in Aquaman, the big-screen take of the underwater-breathing comic book superhero.”
Earlier today, the industry bible also announced that Baywatch star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has been cast as Aquaman’s main foe, Black Manta.
Black Manta is one of DC’s most controversial characters, created in the 1970’s to pursue a campaign for black supremacy.
Abdul-Mateen had another recent close brush with blockbuster fame when he was on the shortlist for the role of Lando Calrissian in the Han Solo Star Wars spin-off movie.
His other on-screen credits include Get Down and the upcoming Baywatch reboot with Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron and The Greatest Showman, Hugh Jackman’s musical biopic of legendary circus founder PT Barnum.
Jason Momoa will play Aquaman with Amber Heard as his queen, Mera, Willem Defoe as Aquaman’s advisor, Dr Vulko.
Patrick Wilson will play another troublesome member of the family as the villainous Orm, Aquaman’s half-brother.
