In March, the former Desperate Housewives star wars among dozens charged by the FBI and US Attorney’s Office in a nationwide college entrance exam cheating scandal.

In May, she pled guilty to honest services fraud, and prosecutors are set to recommend a sentence of four to 10 months in prison.

Ahead of her sentencing on September 13, Otherhood has been released on Netflix, after being pushed back from its original April 26 date.

The movie teams her up with Angela Bassett and Patricia Arquette, and the trio play suburban mothers who show up to the New York City homes of their sons unannounced.

In a recent interview, both Arquette and Bassett praised Huffman for taking responsibility for her actions.

Arquette told ET: “Well, I left her a message because I do think she’s – I mean, I haven’t spoken to her, but I feel that she’s sincerely truly sorry and feels she made a humongous mistake.

“I think she dealt with it the best way that you can deal with it, but I know she’s probably carrying a lot of shame and guilt and all that stuff.

“That’s all I can really do, is just leave her a message and say, ‘You know, I think you handled it the best you could’ve and I know you feel terrible about this. We’re thinking about you’.”

Bassett added: “I think she’s handling it like a grown-up person. She’s handling it like a grown woman.

“It’s a brave thing and a courageous thing.”

Otherhood has been met with poor reviews from critics, and has only 29% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Hollywood Reporter called it “a banal, by-the-numbers waste of three first-rate actresses”.

Los Angeles Times said the film “leaves audiences feeling secondhand embarrassment, not only for everyone’s cringe-worthy behaviour on screen but also for these lauded actresses who both starred in and executive produced this subpar film.”

Huffman has, co-incidentally, been seen in more than one high-profile role since the scandal broke.

When They See Us, a Netflix mini-series about the events of the 1989 Central Park jogger case, was released to huge acclaim back in June.

Otherhood is streaming on Netflix now.
